A Japanese sweet shop about 12 minutes on foot from Masuda Station. Look for the chicken logo. They manufacture and sell a variety of Japanese confections and special manju buns, including their Keiran manju that's been a well-loved Masuda treat since their founding. In that 50 years, the recipe for Keiran manju hasn't changed. The addictive Masuda specialty has a fluffy sponge cake outside and a slightly sweet white bean jam filling. Everyone from kids to seniors love the bite-sized buns, and the popular product is the go-to Masuda souvenir.

A long-standing Japanese sweet shop founded in 1885 that makes confections. They manufacture and sell a variety of Japanese and Western sweets with a focus on Genji-maki, a Tsuwano local favorite. Moist and lightly sweet, they consist of koshi-an bean paste rolled in a thin sponge cake. The sweet received the highest prize at the 23rd National Confectionery Exposition. Genji-soshi-easy to eat individually wrapped slices of Genji-maki-make the perfect Tsuwano gift. Other popular items include Kuri Gomon, sponge cake with a filling of sweet-simmered chestnuts and bean paste, as well as the subtly sweet confection Tsuwano Uiro (sweet rice jelly).

    Shimane Kanoashi-gun Tsuwanocho Honmachi 3
A Japanese sweet shop in Tsuwano, also known as San'in's Little Kyoto. They mainly sell the famous Tsuwano confection known as Genji-maki from a shop decorated with seasonal bonsai trees. Genji-maki is made from high-quality koshi-an bean paste wrapped in a dough made with the richly flavored eggs. It originated with the Yoshimi feudal lords ruling from Tsuwano Castle who revered the Genji gods. It's sliced into three equal parts, making it an easy snack to have at work or home. In addition to the standard koshi-an bean paste, they also sell versions with their own original bean paste. Their range of seasonal confections includes daifuku sweets made with local strawberries from Kimura Farm, sakura-mochi rice cakes that are only available in spring, limited edition summertime pudding, and soft red bean jelly.

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
