The Research Institute for Ghost Food is a souvenir food shop located close to the entrance of the Mizuki Shigeru Museum in Sakaiminato City, Tottori Prefecture. This unusual shop is based on the theme of a mysteriously ghoulish looking laboratory with the staff all wearing white lab coats. The shops signature item is the medama oyaji (literally “eyeball father”) sweet made to look just like the eyeball character from Shigeru Mizuki’s classic manga, GeGeGe no Kitaro. The fine Japanese confections are each carefully handmade by makers from Saiundo, a long running confectionery store in the San’in region. As well as selling gift-style sweets in a box the shop also sells sweets which can be enjoyed there and then on the street.
