A confection-themed tourism facility located five minutes drive from the Tannan Sasayamaguchi interchange on the Maizuru-Wakasa Expressway. Unique, Tamba-style sweets, such as the popular, Japanese-style black soybean and matcha roll cakes, are sold here and no place else. At the cafe operating out of the renovated former Kobe City Waterfall Station, which was moved to this location, visitors can enjoy seasonal cakes and a cup of tea alongside a view of forest and lake. The German building offers fresh, oven baked pizzas, German beer, and sausages. Visitors can also visit a mountain villa moved to the facility which once belonged to a wealthy merchant, as well as an old-fashioned Japanese-style thatched roof home.

The elegant jelly is made with just domestic chestnuts, sugar, and a small amount of kanten algae gelatin. The shop's monaka wafer cakes, stuffed with a high quality domestic azuki bean and Japanese chestnut filling and embossed with an image of the Sasayama Castle ruins, make perfect souvenirs and gifts.

This Japanese confectionary shop is 500 meters from Tambasasyama City Hall. Operating out of an elegant building, the shop sells kuri manju chestnut buns, ohagi bean jam coated rice cakes, kuri kinton mashed sweet potatoes and candied chestnuts, and more. The shop's particularly popular kuri kinton, only available in autumn, is made with just Tamba chestnuts and sugar, giving it a simple flavor. Customers rave that the carefully strained chestnut paste has a delightful, fluffy texture. The shop's kuri ohagi consists of azuki bean mochi wrapped in kuri kinton and delights with the delicate, innate flavor of the chestnuts harmonizing with the azuki bean mochi. Customers can also enjoy seasonal confections along with a cup of matcha green tea inside an establishment engendering an air of history.

This longstanding Japanese confectionary shop opened in 1893. Situated in Tamba-Sasayama, an area blessed with misty mountains and pure mountain water, the shop continues to make confections which respect the changing of the seasons. The shop's Kurikko buns are stuffed with finely minced, diligently crafted candied chestnut and are popular because of their addicting, delicate sweetness. The shop's signature Gyokusui dumplings, consisting of Tamba chestnuts with the astringent skin still on wrapped in Japanese yam grown in Tamba and steamed, make delightful small presents as well as tea snacks to serve to guests. All of the shop's confections are made without any additives whatsoever, and customers rave they accordingly feel comfortable giving them to everyone from small children to senior citizens.

This longstanding Japanese confectionary shop opened in 1909. Operating out of an elegant building exuding a sense of history, the shop has been making confections by hand for over a century. The Tamba-Sasayama area is surrounded by abundant natural beauty and is blessed with black soybeans, chestnuts, rice, and other ingredients for making confections. The shop's Tamba Kuro Natto are made with slow cooked Tamba black soybeans, said to be the best in Japan in terms of both flavor and size; these exquisite treats were the first amanatto-type confection to be made with Tamba black soybeans and have a light flavor and tender texture. The shop's Sasayama Tarts are particularly popular and consist of a pie made with almond powder, butter, and eggs stuffed with plump cooked black soybeans before being baked. The tarts come in around 10 delightful flavors, including chestnut, matcha green tea, and strawberry.

Hyogo Areas

around-area-map

Hyogo prefecture stretches from the north coast to the south coast on the western end of the popular Kansai region, encompassing verdant mountains, urban beaches, and fantastic historical sights. The prefecture’s main attractions lie along the south coast at Kobe, the prefectural capital, a pretty harbor city best known for its production of the renowned Kobe beef, and Himeji, the home of Himeji Castle, one of the country’s most beautifully preserved feudal castles, perched magically atop a hill.
