This Italian restaurant is less about choosing a dish from a menu, and more about the day's fresh seafood, seasonal ingredients, and recommended cooking style. The wide, stylish interior is hard to imagine from the stately exterior, and the luxurious wood grain, along with the lack of set menu, help this shop really stand out. The staff offer excellent explanations of the day's food, and customers only need to give their preferences or mood to get the perfect dish. They also have a sommelier-selected wine list to pair with their dishes for a bit of grown-up fun.

We went there twice seeking a reservation as we stayed nearby the restaurants, we have asked for table for two but the guy was so kind but could not understand French or English, he was kind enough...

This cafe is inside a Kyoto machiya house that has been passed down for four generations. The shop offers a truly Japanese experience as you remove your shoes at the door, step into their floor-seating room and gaze out on the small inner garden while you enjoy their luxurious sweet treats. Their most popular dish is the Tofu Matcha Cheesecake, made without any eggs, milk, butter or other dairy products. They replace the cheese with tofu to create a mellow, creamy half-baked cheesecake delicacy. It has earned high marks not only from those suffering from food allergies, but the calorie-conscious and those who prefer less-sweet treats as well. In the evening the cafe becomes a home bar that is not open to first time customers.

An absolutely lovely cafe and a hidden gem in the heart of Gion, very peaceful and calming amongst the busy streets! The whole cafe was very traditional with beautiful tatami mats and a lovely small...

    Kyoto Kyoto-shi Higashiyama-ku Sanjodori Ohashi Higashiiri 3-16
These caterers specialized in kaiseki cuisine differentiate themselves from typical catering in that the chef goes to the venue of tea gatherings with meal, tea ceremonies, and other events and prepares the food on-site. The company was established in 1902 after its founder learned the basics from the head of the Urasenke school of tea ceremony and opened and shop in Kyoto. Great pains have been taken to achieve complete harmony between every element of their artwork-like cuisine, whether it is the color and shape of the dishes and bowls, the ingredients, or the seasoning. Each of their exquisitely delicious dishes features ingredients brimming with seasonality handsomely arranged in visually appealing ways. The Akasaka branch in Tokyo has its own Japanese-style dining rooms and is popular as a kaiseki restaurant as well as for their catering.

This scent specialty shop is on the Gion shopping streets. This shop's history is unusual among the many incense shops of Kyoto, having been originally focused on making Heart Sutras for the Jodo sect of Buddhism. In addition to their current scent trade, they still make Heart Sutras for Chion-in temple purveyance. Their compiling techniques have been passed down for generations, and they result in scents that are perfect for creating islands of peace in the stress of modern life. Their scented sachets, with colorful butterfly and flower patters are popular with young women as well. The floral scented Tsukimachi-gumo, based on rose-style aromas, also use aromatic woods like Indian sandalwood for relaxed scents that aren't too sweet.

This is the only tempura specialist on the Gion shopping street. You can enjoy tempura in a shop interior filled with the aura of Kyoto. Their leading product is their filling Anago Eel rice bowl, topped with three whole anago eels. They use fresh eels coated with fluffy, crisp tempura batter for a perfect texture. Their Kakiage rice bowl is topped with a massive kakiage fritter the size of a sandal is so popular it often sells out right after opening. The crisp texture plentiful little shrimp and vegetables, and reasonable price, are its claims to fame.

Worst tempura I ever had. Batter is very thick and extremely oily, it is also very soggy. This goes against every aspect of a good tempura that I know. Maybe the quality is going down hill as...

The shop's flagship product is the Higashiyama Gyohei, made from minced hamo conger on a bamboo skewer, grilled over charcoal without steaming, and made to look like a Maiko's pinned hair. Kyoto Areas

around-area-map

Its wooden tea houses, shuffling geisha, and spiritual sights have seen Kyoto hailed as the heart of traditional Japan, a world apart from ultramodern Tokyo. Despite being the Japanese capital for over a century, Kyoto escaped destruction during World War II, leaving behind a fascinating history which can be felt at every turn, from the fully gold-plated Kinkakuji Temple down to traditional customs such as geisha performances and tea ceremonies, which are still practiced to this day.
