Nature Spots in Toyama Area

  • Miyajima Gorge

    Toyama Oyabe-shi Myogadaki
"This valley is famous for the four different waterfalls that spread out as wide as Niagara falls. The area around the first falls alternates between hard and soft rock layers, resulting in a number of ""giant's kettle"" phenomena. These giant's kettles are now designated Toyama National Natural Monuments."
  • Akushiro no Kabe Cliff
    Travel / Tourism
Toyama Nakaniikawa-gun Tateyamamachi Ashikuraji Bunazaka Tono 11 Kokuyurin
"The name Akushiro means ""evil castle,"" and comes from the overwhelming impact of the towering cliff, which seems to turn all comers away. It appears to have been formed by over hundred thousand years glacial and river erosion of a volcanic plateau created by ejecta from the Mt. Tateyama Volcano, and this cliff is formed entirely of volcanic rock called ignimbrite. The scenery here is particularly stunning during the fall foliage season. It was designated a Toyama Prefecture Historic Landmark/Place of Scenic Beauty/Natural Monument in 1965."
  • Hannoki Falls

Toyama Nakaniikawa-gun Tateyamamachi Ashikuraji Bunazaka Tono 11 Kokuyurin
This waterfall is on the right cliff of Shomyo valley, a national Place of Scenic Beauty and National Natural Monument. This waterfall only appears in the snowmelt season, and at 500 meters is taller than Shomyo falls. Shomyo falls itself has been selected one of 100 elections of the waterfall in Japan, so the outstanding natural scenery in the area is truly overwhelming. Hannoki falls is only visible for a short time, so be sure to catch it!

    Toyama Nakaniikawa-gun Tateyamamachi Ashikuraji
The highest spring in Japan at 2,320 meters above sea level, with numerous sulfur vents and the smell of sulfur, the desolate landscape is hellishly bleak. (The area is currently off-limits due to the volcanic gases emanating from the spring).

Toyama Nakaniikawa-gun Tateyamamachi Ashikuraji Division Dodaira
"It is one of the Tateyama Hells visited by believers in the age of religious asceticism, and is also called ""Blood Pond Hell."" It contains iron oxide and appears blood red in color; although it is called a pond, it is more like a puddle of water, which is the result of water accumulating in the crater."

The area about 15 kilometers from nationally registered Tangible Cultural Property, Sasazu bridge is designated the Jinzu Gorge Prefectural Park. Toyama Areas

around-area-map

Toyama is one of the three prefectures that house the Japanese Alps, with its southern and eastern borders comprising one long stretch of mountains, out of which the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route is forged. While traditional crafts fill the northern coastal cities of Toyama and Takaoka, thatched roof houses offer unrivalled views against a backdrop of fantastic scenery at Gokayama in the mountainous area in the south of the prefecture.
