This is Japan’s largest Chinatown in Naka Ward, Yokohama City, where more than 500 shops are lined up. This area is always bustling with local people and tourists seeking authentic Chinese cuisine and culture. The Chinese New Year and especially the parade and the lion dance are events which are representative of Yokohama’s tourism. In all directions into Chinatown, there are gates with guardian deities enshrined in each of these gates: there is the Choyo-mon gate in the east, the Suzaku-mon gate in the south, the Enpei-mon gate in the west and the Genbu-mon gate in the north. The Suzaku-mon gate is convenient for coming from and going to Yokohama Motomachi.

"This cargo and passenger ship was constructed for the Seattle route in 1930. It is a grand vessel, with a total weight of 11,622 tons, and a total length of 163.3 meters. Across 30 years of seafaring, it has crossed the Pacific Ocean 254 times, and carried 25,000 passengers, earning the nickname ""Queen of the North Pacific."" You can tour the passenger room where Charlie Chaplin stayed, or the First-class lounge with gorgeous art deco-styled interiors. In 2016, it became a Nationally Designated Important Cultural Property."

The military commander, Kanu who was famous for the “Annals of the Three Kingdoms” was deified and is a symbol of Chinatown worshiped as the god of prosperous businesses. In 1859, Japan opened to the world and the port of Yokohama also opened. Three years later, a Chinese person opened a small modest shrine while holding a wooden Kanu statue. This is said to be the beginning of the Yokohama Kantei-Byo Shrine. The first generation was built in the Meiji period, and the current one which was rebuilt in 1990 is the fourth one to be built. The gorgeous and luxurious building is packed with impressive traditional Chinese architectural techniques.

This temple, in commemoration of the Chinese general and god of war Guan Yu, is perhaps the most ornate among all. At the heart of Yokohamas vibrant Chinatown, it is an impressive structure with...

It holds in excess of about 250,000 documents related to such topics as Yokohama’s history and culture, the harbor and the port and the economy from the end of the Edo period to the early Showa period. It plays a role to communicate the history of modern Yokohama to future generations. The “Tamakusu tree” in the courtyard, managed to survive even though it was damaged by fire and an earthquake, is also a highlight which is a symbol of Yokohama open port.
