    Yamagata Yamagata-shi Zao Onsen
This Jizo statue is enshrined on Mt. Jizo, in the Zao Mountain Range. It's located about 100 meters from the Zao Ropeway Jizo Sancho Station building, on the Zao Ropeway line from Zao Onsen. It took over 30 years to make, and since its completion in 1775, it has been a center of faith and protection from disaster. It is called one of the Three Divinities of Zao, along with Zao Daikokuten and Zao Daigongen, also enshrined on the mountains of Zao.

Yamagata Pref. Obanazawashi Ginzanshimbata In the ground
Discovered in 1456 by Gika Ichirozaemon of Kanazawa, Nobesawa Silver Mine is now a National Historic Site. In its heydays, it was one of Japan’s three largest silver mines. One of the rare pleasures of this mine is the chance to tour it in a yukata.

    Yamagata Yamagata-shi Yamadera 4456-1
This mound is located inside Risshakuji Temple in Yamadera, Yamagata City. It is thought to be the place that inspired the line “the sound of cicadas penetrates the quiet and the rocks” from Matsuo Basho’s “Oku no Hosomichi.” There is a monument in the grounds left by his pupils with the same phrase written on it.

Yamagata Areas

around-area-map

Although often overlooked, Yamagata prefecture by no means lacks appeal: the Yamadera temple trail through the mountains, deliciously tender Yonezawa wagyu, and over 100 steaming hot springs, most notably Zao Onsen, await visitors. When winter comes, the snowcapped peaks become dotted with skiers by day and onsen-goers by night, while summer brings the celebration of juicy Yamagata cherries.
