An open construction surrounded by Zao’s nature, it is a popular spot for enjoying the hot spring or peaceful walk through the woods. The hot spring water is of the highly acidic sulfur variety, also called the “beauty maker.” It is closed from December to the following March. Take the Yamako Bus to its last stop in the “Zao Onsen” direction.

How wonderful to soak in the Hot Springs breathing in the fresh air and listening to the river while enjoying the autumn colors. Awesome experience! No showers or washing, and very minimal changing...

The waters are simple spring waters (sodium, chlorides, and hydrogen carbonate spring water), said to be beneficial for muscle and joint pains, and fatigue.

Warashi-yu is a free public foot bath located in the Ginzan Hot Spring area in the city of Obanazawa, Yamagata Prefecture. It is located along the Ginzan River at the entrance to the hot spring area, and as visitors soak their feet, they can take a look at the seasonal changes on the surrounding mountains and see the multistory wooden inns built in a Western style redolent of the Taisho period (1912–1926). The water, which is said to be effective against neuralgia, rheumatism, and skin diseases, flows directly from a spring, so it can be a bit on the hot side. The benches are placed with consideration for height and position, so that visitors can sit and chat leisurely with one another. • Shirogane-yu
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
Yamagata Pref. Obanazawashi Ginzanshimbata In the ground
Located in the middle of the Ginzan Hot Spring area, Shirogane-yu is a communal bathhouse in which visitors can still sense some of the atmosphere of this establishment’s days as a therapeutic spa. The modern exterior was designed by the architect Kengo Kuma. The second floor is characterized by large windows, which create a subdued light, while the first floor has an eerie, cave-like quality. The bathtubs are small with a capacity of four persons. Due to its sulfur content, the water is cloudy, and it is extremely hot as it flows out of the spring, so people who do not like very hot baths need some time to adjust to the temperature.

Yamagata Areas

around-area-map

Although often overlooked, Yamagata prefecture by no means lacks appeal: the Yamadera temple trail through the mountains, deliciously tender Yonezawa wagyu, and over 100 steaming hot springs, most notably Zao Onsen, await visitors. When winter comes, the snowcapped peaks become dotted with skiers by day and onsen-goers by night, while summer brings the celebration of juicy Yamagata cherries.
