    This mountain road extends from Togatta Onsen in Miyagi Prefecture to Botaira Highland in Yamagata Prefecture, running 26 kilometers through the Zao Mountain Range. The road is closed from early November through late April for snow, but when it opens the snowy walls of winter remain, until they give way to the green of summer, then the lovely leaves of Autumn, letting you enjoy the year-round beauty of Zao on your drive.

    This morning market is a 30-year-old market held only on Sundays and public holidays in Yuriage in Natori city, which has been a fishing port since the Edo period. With their motto “great goods for cheap”, there are a variety of stores including 50 permanent stores that sell local fresh seafood fished from the nearby ocean, local vegetables, and pre-made side dishes. A connecting hearth area allows you to cook and eat your purchases onsite.
  • Shichikashuku Kaido

    Miyagi Katta-gun Shichikashukumachi Namezu
    This Edo-period highway passes through what is today Shichikashuku Town, Katta County. The area became known as Shichikashuku because there were seven shukuba (post stations) along the highway, which was the major thoroughfare between the Oshu Highway and the Dewa Highway at the time. Every August an event called “Waraji de Aruko Shichikashuku” in which participants walk the highway in straw sandals is organized.

    This bridge over the Matsu River, a tributary of the Shiraishi River, is located in National Route 457 in Togattaonsen, Zao Town, Katta County. Large kokeshi dolls have been installed on both ends of the bridge recognition of Zao’s status as a major producer of the traditional toys. This has earned it the nickname “Kokeshi Bridge.”

    This important preservation district of historic buildings is located in Murata Town, Shibata County. Long ago the region prospered as a trading hub on the highway that connected Sendai and Yamagata. Even now, it retains rows of storehouses owned by the merchants of Murata, who engaged businesses such as the safflower trade. The Kura no Machi Murata Hotei Festival is held here every October.

    Zao Highline is a 2.5-kilometer toll road, branching from the Zao Echo Highline, and it directly connects the mountaintop parking lot of Mt. Katsutadake. The tall walls of snow that line the road in the spring are a sight to see. Golden Week (early May) is the best time to see it. You can easily see Zao’s famous Goshikinuma (Five Colored Marshes) and crater from the car park though you will need a snowsuit in the spring because of the cold. Enjoy the beautiful views of fresh green leaves in the summer and beautiful autumnal colors in the fall. The Highline is closed from early November to late April because of snow.

    One of the most picturesque locations found in the Zao Mountain Range. A parking area is located nearby on the Zao Echo Line road and can accommodate around 10 vehicles. Two waterfalls can be seen from Takimidai. The waterfall with the greater water flow is Fudo Falls; boasting a 54 meter drop, the falls are watched over by a statue of the Buddhist deity Acala called the Zao Fudoson. The other waterfall, the thin Sanriku Falls, winds its way through the mountains to drop three times into deep basins and has been selected as one of the 100 most beautiful waterfalls in Japan. The beauty of this location is a favorite topic for poets and visitors will find a stone monument inscribed with a waka poem by Reiu Uda here.
