  • Sennin Pass

    Located on the boundary between the cities of Tono and Kamaishi along National Route 283 in the Kitakami Mountains, Sennin Pass is an 887-meter pass located in a verdant green area. Until the Sennin Pass Road was opened in 2007, the old road, full of sharp curves and steep slopes was known as a difficult route. Now the old Kamaishi Road is a tourist-oriented driving route that gives people a sense of being deep in the mountains. It is known as a spot for seeing spring greenery and autumn leaves, and from late October to early November, visitors can enjoy the splendid colors of the oaks, hill cherries, maples and other deciduous trees.

    Iwate Kamaishi-shi Hakozakicho
    This is located at the end of the Hakozaki Peninsula and is one of the most famous scenic spots along the Rikuchu Coast, offering a view created by the sea, wind, rain, and other natural forces over the eons. Looking to the north, visitors can see from Otsuchi Bay to Yamada Bay, and looking toward the south, they can see from Sangan Island to Kamaishi Bay. To the south is an immense area of closely huddled granite rock formations, and Sangan Island is visible. Visitors can travel the 6. 8 kilometers from Hakozaki Shirahama to the point via a walking trail clearly marked with directional signs.

    This store produces and sells Kamaishi's famous Kaiho-zuke. It is located approximately a four-minute walk from JR Kamaishi Station. Sanriku Kaiho-zuke is a best-selling productmade with a blend of Sanriku mekabu (wakame seaweed root) pickled in a secret sauce, Sanriku abalone, and salmon roe atop, which has been boiled using a unique damashi-ni technique to make ittender. The rich and full flavor is perfect to go with white rice. The store also sells other seafood products, such as Hotate ougon-zuke, which is soy marinated mekabu with salmon roe steeped in sake, as well as Hotate herring roe ougon-zuke.

    This limited-time sport from July to September is when you try to reach the goal across large and small waterfalls while walking and swimming in the river against the flow of the Uchimaki mountain streams. Everyone from elementary school-age children can participate, and it is perfect for families. To join, contact the Furusato Taiken Gakushu Kyokai. The meeting place for the activity is the Uchimagi Visitor Center.

It is situated in the forest, surrounded by amber inside the Kuji Kohaku Museum. Visitors can enjoy lunch or dinner courses with dishes that center on local ingredients such as seafood, Iwate chicken, Shorthorn beef and Sasuke pork. The menu and prices fluctuate depending on the stock purchased that day. The restaurant's pasta dishes with their seasonal ingredients are also popular.”Kunnoko"" means ""kohaku"", or ""amber"" in the Kuji dialect."

    ツアーの昼食で利用しました。 とある博物館の隣りにあり、結果 ここを見学、その後買い物に誘導される と言う仕組みでしたが。 ビストロと名乗るのは いかがなものか? と言うランチ内容です。 ドリンクの種類も少ないし。 何故か、コーヒーをアイスにすると 100円増しと書いてあるし。 お薦めはできません。

    Located about a 55-minute drive from Kunohe Interchange on the Hachinohe Expressway, this kiln for Kokuji ware has a history of about 200 years. The glaze made from iron sand and rice husk ash using local Kuji soil is attractive for its unique elegance and simplicity. Inheriting traditional techniques, each piece is handmade using a potter's wheel. It also sells coffee cups, square plates and sake cups. In addition, the pottery experience where you can create your own pieces is popular. Many tourists visit the Kokuji Pottery Fair every May for the auctions from the kiln.

    Iwate Kuji-shi Okawamecho
    This stream is located about a 40-minute drive from the Kunohe Interchange on the Hachinohe Expressway. Its gorge has been set aside as Kuji-Hiraniwa Prefectural Nature Park. Along the stream is KagamiIwa (Mirror Rock), one of a series of limestone rocks formed over 200 million years ago by coral reefs in the South Seas. The contrast between the white rocks and the green trees is lovely, and the gorge is known as a prime spot for autumn leaves. Near Mirror Rock is Furosen, named one of the 20 Best Spring Water in Iwate Prefecture. The stream is also a prime spot for catching sweetfish and char.

    This eatery is where you can enjoy seafood caught off of Kitasanriku and local cuisine. The most popular dish is their Omiya soba and udon, which includes plenty of seafood such as sea urchin, scallops and shrimp, and the Sanriku region’s prided seaweed. Their seafood rice bowl “Tairyoju,” which has different contents depending on the season and purchase conditions, is also recommended. There are also a rich variety of other dishes such as sushi, tempura and western selections. With a total of 120 seats at tables and in tatami rooms, you can relax while eating your meal.
  • Rosoku Iwa (Candle Rock)

    This rock is located in the north of Jodogahama Beach that juts out of the Ozawa Coast, and a 15-minute bus ride from Miyako Station on the Sanriku Railway (Miyako to Kuji) Rias Line. At Jodogahama Terminal Bus Stop, visitors get off and walk for five minutes. This giant rock created by igneous rock smashing through the surrounding rocks. It is 40 meters tall, 7 meters wide at the top, and 3 meters wide at the bottom. It is an unusual rock, in that the igneous dike is exposed and visible. It has been designated a National Monument, and it is also recognized by Sanriku Geo Park. Since visitors cannot approach the rock from the land, they need to take advantage of Miyako Jodogahama Boat Cruise.

    This is located across from Hidejima Island, and visitors can watch as seawater propelled by the force of the waves is pushed high into the air. The rising tide can push the water 6 to 15 meters high, and even 30 meters, when the sea is especially rough and a north wind is blowing, making this blowhole the largest in Japan. It has been designated as a National Monument and recognized by Sanriku Geo Park. It can also be viewed as part of an island tour sponsored by Miyako Jodogahama Boat Cruise.

    This island is a 15-minute bus ride from Miyako Station on the Sanriku Railway (Miyako to Kuji) Rias Line. At Jodogahama Terminal Bus Stop, visitors get off and walk for five minutes. Hidejima is an island, 1. 8 km in area, off the coast of the hamlet of Hidejima. The island gets its name (“Sun Appearance”) from the way that the sun appears to be rising out of the island if one is watching from the shore. The island is home to Japan’s largest nesting area for the critically endangered band-rumped stormy petrel, so it has been recognized as a National Monument and a part of Sanriku Geo Park. Humans are forbidden to land on the island and can see it only from a distance on one of Miyako Jodogahama Boat Cruise.

    This curry shop is located along National Route 45, 465 meters from Sokei Stationon the Sanriku Railway Rias Line (Miyako-Kuji). They use only safe and reliable ingredients with no additives for their curry, naan and yogurt, and make everything from scratch every day. Even the onions in the curry are grown on their own fields. The basic chicken curry with large whole pieces of chicken wings is highly recommended. You can even take home their chicken, keema, beef or pork curry, which they process and place in retort packages in-house.

    This museum introduces the life and wisdom of the Kawai area of Miyako City, where the mountains bring rich blessings, there is little flat ground, and the winter is extremely cold. Mountain equipment from the Kitakami mountains are exhibited in the first exhibition room. In the second exhibition room, there is a reproduction of a Nambu Magariya farmhouse, and items from daily life in villages is stored and on display. The third exhibition room has a reproduction of the Ogawa Clinic's examination room dedicated to mountain area medical care, and introduces the achievements of the predecessors of community health care. Some of the exhibits are designated as national Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties.

    Located about a 130-minute drive from Morioka-minami Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway or a one-minute walk from the Okujodogahama bus stop, this monument built in front of the Jodogahama Rest House is one of many in the prefecture for Kenji Miyazawa, who was born in Hanamaki City. It was built in October 1996 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Kenji Miyazawa's birth, and is inscribed with the tanka poem “Beautiful and beaming, briny velvet, sea tangles were spread all over the shore of the serene light,” which he composed in July 1917 when he visited Jodogahama with the east coast visiting group from Hanamaki-machi.

    Japan’s first marine science museum, it is located in Jodogahama Beach about four kilometers from JR Miyako Station. In addition to introducing the history of Iwate’s fishing grounds, traditional and modern fishing methods, and aquaculture techniques, sea life inhabiting the Sanriku area is shown in a giant diorama. There is a large aquarium in the “Osakana Corner” where you can see a variety of marine creatures such as fish found in the waters near Iwate and clown fish living on coral reefs. You can also experience being in the fishing industry by painting scallop shells and coring wakame seaweed, and canning to make time capsules (reservations required).

    This long-established sushi restaurant is located about a five-minute walk from JR Miyako Station, and provides fresh seafood brought in at Sanriku Miyako Port. You can enjoy seasonal ingredients at reasonable prices. Their “miyabi” sushi set with 11 pieces, made in the spirit of encouraging the revitalization of the Sanriku region, is especially recommended. In addition to counter seating with the fresh ingredients lined up in front of you, there is also table and tatami room seating that can be used for banquets. Besides their nigiri and chirashi sushi selections, they also have rolled and inari sushi, and even a children’s menu.

    This sales facility for products direct from producers is located along National Route 45 inside Roadside Station Noda, which is combined with the Sanriku Railway Rias Line’s Rikuchu-Noda Station. It offers local specialty goods such as locally harvested fresh vegetables and dried sea and mountain products. There is also a corner for fried foods lined with freshly prepared side dishes, and you can also enjoy local flavors such as “tofu dengaku” with garlic miso and “kushi mochi” with walnut miso in chewy mochi rice cakes. The dumplings filled with sweet paste using acorns that have been carefully removed of their toxins are their most popular item.
