A restaurant standing along National Route 5 heading south from Kutchan Station on the Hakodate Main Line. The restaurant operates out of a remodeled old elementary school building. The old fashioned, wooden schoolhouse gives it a nostalgic atmosphere. Bouken serves new takes on home style Japanese cooking made with an abundance of local vegetables and edible wild plants. The wild plant tempura, in particular, is popular for its natural, plain flavor. In summer, the restaurant serves tree sap coffee made with sap from maple and white birch trees.

A restaurant located on the second floor of the NAC Niseko Adventure Centre. Mt. Yotei rises in the distance beyond the restaurant's windows, giving the establishment an open, airy feel. On days with good weather the windows are opened up, turning part of the restaurant into an open terrace area. The restaurant's menu primarily consists of hearty, American-sized hamburgers. The restaurant also offers a variety of yoshoku Japanese-style Western food dishes like hamburg steaks and taco rice. The restaurant has a kid's menu and children's pace, making it a great destination for families as well.

This sweet shop in Kutchan Town is committed to local Hokkaido ingredients. It's the fourth building down from Kutchan Station, and you can spot it with its cute ornament of soft serve ice cream cone out front. Their most popular item is fresh baked cream puffs available in limited quantities. If you want to try them while they're still crispy, we recommend buying within an hour of being baked. Refrigeration is required, and they must be eaten the same day. Other popular items include tofu chiffon with a cute face on it, Hangetsu Lake themed cookies (at the base of Mt. Yotei), custard pie, and more. The shop has many items only available there.

  • Konpira Crater-Remnants of the Disaster Walking Trail
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Hokkaido Abutaguntouyakochou Touyakonsen
These trails meander around the remaining structures and remnants that were affected by the Mt. Usuzan's eruption in 2000. The trails, located in Toyako Town, start behind the Toyako Visitor's Center and Volcanic Science Hall. If visiting only the relics, the walk will only take about 30 minutes, but the full-trail course is two hours. Near the entryway is an observation tower, where one can view the Yasuragi no Ie, which used to be the municipal hot springs bath, prior to the eruption. Even with the passing of time since the eruption, one can sense the power and awfulness of nature in the sight inside the remaining sturdily structure that was swallowed with muddy waters. With just a little detour off the trails, one can come upon an exquisite emerald bright crater called the Yukun crater.
  • Za hotcake shop

    Hokkaido Abutagunkucchanchou Minamichijounishi 3-1
This is a pancake and hotcake restaurant near the Kutchan Station of the JR Hakodate line. The plain hotcakes wafting with the smell of butter are not overly sweet made to melt-in-your mouth perfection. All batter is made to order, so allergy sensitivities can be accommodated as well. The batter for the pancakes uses homemade low acidity Caspian yogurt, making them refreshingly doughy. There are both sweet pancakes such as the white pancake with a strawberry salty milk-topping, as well as more hardy meal-type pancakes such as the kimchi bacon cream sauce pancakes. They even offer baby pancakes, made especially for babies.

An udon noodle restaurant which looks like an old Japanese-style home and which commands a view of Mt. Yotei. In order to serve the tastiest udon in Hokkaido, the owner quit his job as an office worker and apprenticed at a famous udon restaurant in Osaka before opening his own establishment. Making as little use of additives as possible, the noodles are made with 100% domestic flour and natural sea salt from Naruto, while the broth is made by slowly simmering konbu kelp and katsuo skipjack tuna in spring water from Mt. Yotei. The restaurant serves cold and hot udon noodles with a variety of toppings. One of the most popular items on the menu is the Chikutamaten Bukkake Udon, which is topped with runny soft-boiled egg tempura and chikuwa fish paste sausage tempura. The owner recommends the Nonosan Donsukinabe, a party-style dish in which udon noodles take center stage.

This eatery with about 60 years of history is located in Toyako Onsen. The store is known for its home cooking that uses vegetables picked in the morning, local seasonal seafood and locally raised meat. The small interior has a relaxing atmosphere that feels like you're at home. The scallop and egg rice bowl is highly recommended. It has young shellfish fry taken from Funka (volcano) Bay cooked with egg over rice, and comes with shellfish miso soup and pickles. The Tonkatsu Set using fresh Date golden pork and pork cutlet rice bowl are also popular. The fresh sashimi assortment is also a perfect match as a snack when drinking.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
