Tottori Sand Dunes run along the Sea of Japan coast in Tottori City. They are the largest dunes in Japan and extend 16 kilometers from east to west and 2.4 kilometers from north to south. The landscape formed by the granite sand which is carried from the Chugoku Mountains due to the swift current of the Sendai River and the sea breeze from the Sea of Japan is beautiful. From the viewpoint of these dunes having characteristic topography, there are places with large depressions which are called “suri-bachi” because their shapes resemble that of an earthenware mortar, and it is said that large ones can be as much as 40 meters deep. It is also fun to ride a sightseeing camel through the sand dunes or glide over the sand on a sand board. The sand dunes were designated as a Natural Monument of Japan in 1955, and were selected as one of Japan’s top 100 geological features in 2007.

These dunes are located near Enshunada Coastal Park of Nakatajima-cho, Chuo-ku, Hamamatsu City. The dunes are known for the wind ripples carved in the sand by the wind blowing in from Enshunada. From mid-May to late-August, the loggerhead turtle-an endangered species-comes ashore to lay its eggs here. It is often promoted as a site for filming video, and it is very popular as a location for movies.

"These sand dunes are located within ""Omaezaki Enshu -nada Prefectural Natural Park"" in Omaezaki City, Shizuoka Prefecture. Every year from May to August, you can see beach plants such as ""shore bindweed"" and ""Asiatic sand sedge."" Also, the ""uminari"" and ""namikozo"", which you can hear at times when the weather is changing, were selected for inclusion in the ""100 Soundscapes of Japan."""
  • Uchinada Sand Dunes

    Ishikawa Kahoku-gun Uchinadamachi
This sand dunes extend from Awagasaki-machi, Kanazawa City northward to Unoke, Kahoku City. About one kilometer wide, they run along the Japan Sea Coast, a succession of transverse dunes about 20 meters high. Uchinada Town has become a bedroom community for Kanazawa, but the region was formerly used as a firing range by the U. S. military. It is also known for the disputes that local residents opposed to the firing range and their supporters had with the police. Nowadays, it has become a place for marine sports and surf casting, and it attracts crowds of visitors in the summer. Parts of the sand dunes are used for farm fields and rice paddies, and Unoke is famous for throughout Japan for its unique Prefectural Sand Dune Agriculture Experiment Station.
