Park / Green Space Spots in Minamisatsuma Area

  • Bandokorobana Nature Park

    Kagoshima Pref. Minamikyushushi Eichoubeppu 5202
A nature park built along the coast in Minamikyushu City. “Bansho” means “guardhouse” in Japanese, a reference to a guardhouse which once stood in the area. The circular inlet was formed naturally through the erosion of volcanic rock by ocean waves. The park is famous for its picturesque scenery and view of beautiful Kaimondake Volcano just across the sea. The Japanese cartographer Ino Tadataka, who traveled the country making maps, praised the scenery here as the most spectacular in Japan. Seahorses live in abundance here, and the nearby Seahorse House aquarium breeds seahorses.
  • Fukiage-hama Kaihin Koen (Seaside Beach Park)
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Kagoshima Pref. Minamisatsumashi Kasedatakahashi 1936-2
A seaside park located a 40-minute drive from the Taniyama interchange on the Ibusuki Skyline. Designed based on the theme of a place which coexisted with nature where people could regain their humanity, the park’s vast, 110 hectare grounds encompass paid facilities such as a swimming pool and campground as well as a sports ground, wild bird watching facility, and outdoor obstacle course, making it a popular destination for families with children. The park is also replete with physically challenged accessible parking and toilets. Further, the park’s store, learning garden, and soccer dome toilets have diaper changing stations, making it easy for those with babies to enjoy the park as well.
  • Onodake Park

    Kagoshima Minamikyushu-shi Eicho Kori
"This park is located a 20-minute drive from the Ei Interchange on the Ibusuki Skyline. The park has stairs consisting of 108 steps leading up to the top of Mt. Onodake called the Chaju Stairs, a reference to the Japanese term for one's 108th birthday. The stairs are inscribed with the words in Japanese for one's 60th birthday (""kanreki""), 77th birthday (""kiju""), and 88th birthday (""beiju"") along the way. Onodake Shrine, a Shinto shrine built over 700 years ago, stands near the top of the mountain, while from the mountaintop Shiroro Observatory, visitors can get a sweeping view of the entirety of the Nansatsu Plateau."
  • Sebira Nature Park

    Kagoshima Minamikyushu-shi Eicho Kori Nagasaki
"This park is located a five-minute drive from Ei Station on the JR Ibusuki Makurazaki Line. Primarily consisting of coastline along National Route 226, the sight of Mt. Kaimondake, nicknamed the ""Satsuma Fuji,"" as seen from the shade of the park's old pine trees is truly stunning. On clear days, visitors can also see all the way to the islands of Iwo Jima, Takeshima, and even distant Yakushima. During sillago fishing season, the park is visited by many families with children; it's also the perfect place to take a break while enjoying a scenic drive through the area. A stone monument stands on the grounds which is dedicated to famed poet Tekkan Yosano and his wife author Akiko Yosano, who visited the area in 1929."
  • Kiyomizu Iwaya Park
    Leisure / Hobbies
    Kagoshima Minamikyushu-shi Kawanabecho Kiyomizu 3882
This park is situated along the upper reaches of the lush Manose River a 15-minute drive from the Kawanabe Interchange on the Ibusuki Skyline via National Route 225. The park grounds are the location of the Kiyomizu Magaibutsu, a group of Buddhist sculptures carved into a cliff 20 meters tall and 400 meters long. The park's campground, open year-round, and river-powered lazy river pool (open only in summer) are particularly popular. The park's array of facilities which aid visitors in relaxing also includes the Sakura no Yakata, a cafe operating out of a building resembling the Ginkakuji in Kyoto. Visitors can enjoy leisure activities and the great outdoors in the park year-round, including viewing cherry blossoms in spring, fireflies in early summer, and fall foliage in autumn.

Kagoshima Areas

around-area-map

Over 100 active volcanoes across Kagoshima make it one of the Japan's most exciting prefectures. The prefectural capital, Kagoshima city, looks out to one of the prefecture’s most spectacular volcanoes, Sakurajima, an island of its own that can be visited and seen close up or admired from afar, with the promise of breathtaking sunsets complete with frequent puffs of smoke and ash. Down the Satsuma Peninsula, the most southerly part of mainland Japan, waterfalls, sand onsen, and fascinating history await, while Kagoshima's abundance of satsuma imo (sweet potato) provide a wholesome snack as well as one of Japan's favourite drinks - shochu.
