This is an impressive waterfall 20 meters high and 120 meters wide is counted among Japan’s top 100 waterfalls and Oita Prefecture’s top 100 scenic beauties. It is unusual in that it appeared from the ground so suddenly, created 90,000 years ago with the eruption of Mt. Aso and the subsequent pyroclastic flow. It is also called the “Niagara of the Orient.” A suspension bridge spans the front and it is possible to walk close to the falling waters.

The collective name for a 20-meter-high, 100-meter-wide-waterfall (Ontaki) on the main current of the Ono River and a smaller 18 meter tall, four-meter-wide waterfall (Mentaki) on the Hirai River tributary, the falls are nicknamed “the Niagara of Ono.” A walkway draws close to the larger waterfall and the view from the platform jutting out at the end is stunning. Oita Areas

around-area-map

A trip to Oita is tantamount to a long soak in the Beppu baths. The mountainous, coastal prefecture of Oita is renowned for having more onsen than any other prefecture in Japan, most of which lie in the city of Beppu on the west coast of Kyushu, recognizable by its pungent sulphuric aroma and the clouds of steam that puff up across the hillside. Away from the Beppu hot springs await mountains, waterfalls, and temples, so don’t hesitate to explore Oita a little further.
