Waterfall Spots in Tokyo Area

  • Hossawa Falls
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokyo Nishitamagunhinoharamura Motoshuku
A four tier, 60 meter tall water fall along the Seto Stream, a tributary of the Kitaakikawa River. This waterfall is the only one in Tokyo to have been selected as one of the 100 most beautiful in Japan. The final tier of the waterfall is a 23 meter drop, and a pathway extends right up to it. The area gets quite cold in winter, and during this time visitors can enjoy the rare and wonderful site of waterfall icicles. The falls are illuminated at night in mid-August, and the Hossawa Falls Winter Festival is held around the time it freezes over.
  • Uramigataki Falls

    Tokyo Hachijomachi Nakanogo
"This waterfall is formed where the Mihara River meets an irrigation channel used to supply water for rice paddies in Nakanogo. Of particular note is the fact that visitors can view the waterfall from behind. The waterfall's name literally means ""rear-viewing falls"" and is derived from the fact that the path along the irrigation channel passes through the rear side of the falls. Situated amidst a lush, naturally beautiful area, visitors will feel like they're deep in a jungle. An outdoor bath with spectacular mountain valley scenery can be found on the side of the walking path in the area, and visitors can enjoy a relaxing soak while looking down on the falls (note that as the bath is mixed gender, bathers must wear a swimsuit) - be careful on rainy days, however, because the path to the falls is not paved and is slippery when wet."
  • Ja-taki waterfall (Seiryu Daigongen)

    Tokyo Hachioujishi Takaomachi 2173
A dojo where you can experience waterfall ablutions, a practice performed privately in ancient times by mountain ascetics to purify the body and soul prior to engaging in more serious training. This is one of the traditional training experiences offered to regular visitors by the Head Temple Yakuo-in; professional instruction is provided each month on the first Saturday, the 17th (temple festival day), and the 27th.

    Tokyo Nishitama-gun Hinoharamura Kazuma

    檜原村のそれもかなり奥の方にある滝。駐車場から滝まではすぐ。大規模な滝ではないが、涼しく水音が気持ちいい。

Tokyo Areas

around-area-map

The setting of countless iconic movie scenes and the inspiration for songs, poetry, and literature worldwide, Tokyo barely requires an introduction. It’s hard for the kaleidoscopic neon lights, wacky pop culture, and some of the world’s tallest structures not to instill excitement in any first-time visitor to Tokyo, whether you’re in the very center of the hustle and bustle in Shinjuku or Shibuya or looking in from the quieter suburbs.
