  • Shirodake Observation Platform
    Travel / Tourism
    Nagasaki Goto-shi Kishukumachi Kishiku
This observation platform, a 30-minute drive from Fukue Port, is located on the north side of Fukue Island not far from Hamada Beach. The observation platform is also located on the site where Kishiku Castle, built in 1383 by the eighth head of the Goto clan Uku Satoro, stood. From 216 meters above sea level, visitors can see not only the surrounding townscape and the Hassaku Plateau, but also all the way to the islands of Naru Island and Nakadori Island. Visitors are drawn by the majestic, sprawling scenery, which resembles a veritable diorama. A trail leading away from the observation platform to the top of the mountain also connects to the No. 1 Shirodake Observatory, and from there visitors can get a 360-degree, panoramic view of the area.
  • Myojoin Temple
    Travel / Tourism
    Nagasaki Goto-shi Yoshidacho 1905
"This Buddhist temple is a 15-minute drive from Fukue Port. There is also a regularly scheduled sightseeing bus service, making access easy. The main temple complex straddles the islands of Iki, Tsushima, and the Goto Islands and is part of a Japan Heritage listing. The temple was also patronized by the Goto clan, whose members served as lords of the local domain for generations. When the temple was visited by the great monk Kukai in 806, he christened it the ""Myojoan,"" meaning ""Morning Star Hermitage,"" after seeing a star at dawn. The head temple of Shingon Buddhism on the Goto Islands, the temple is also believed to be the oldest one on the archipelago. The temple enshrines Buddhist statues and ritual implements dating to the Kamakura and Muromachi periods, including historically valuable items designated Important Cultural Properties."
  • Samurai Mansion Street
    Travel / Tourism
    Nagasaki Goto-shi Bukeyashiki
This street, a five-minute drive from Fukue Airport and a 10-minute walk from Fukue Port, is southwest of Fukue Castle Ruins (Ishida Castle Ruins). The street is notable for the many samurai residences standing along it, and much period scenery remains untouched here. The castle-like stone walls are particularly eye-catching and are made of small, leftover semi-cylindrical stones piled on top of each other. The ostentatious gates of the residences are also acclaimed as something you can't see anywhere else. In addition, there are facilities where visitors can come in contact with the history and culture of Goto, such as the Fukue Cultural Hall and the Goto Tourism and Historical Materials Museum.

This museum faces the Nizo Yamamoto Art Museum on the Samurai Mansion Street a five-minute drive from Fukue Port. The museum was built on the grounds of the Fukue Samurai House, a city-designated Historic Site. The museum displays photos of the Samurai Mansion Street. From a Japanese style room in the museum, visitors can also view a garden created in the same style as the National Place of Scenic Beauty-designated Ishida Castle Goto Garden. In a cafe space, visitors can eat famous Goto dishes such as Goto udon noodles and kankoro mochi. The museum also holds activity classes such as pounding mochi rice cake and decorating traditional baramon kites. In addition, the museum rents electrically assisted bicycles, making it a great place to check out before exploring the island.

    基本、案内施設のような感じだろう。中に入るとガイドの方が話しかけてはくれたが、メインとなるものはとくにない様子で、展示も少しだけあるがこれというものでもない。松園邸の案内があるのでそれを少し見る程度だろうか。

    Nagasaki Goto-shi Suehiromachi 3-1
"This souvenir store is situated on Prefectural Route 49 near Goto City Hall a 10-minute walk from Fukue Port. The ""Kaisanbutsu"" part of the store's name means ""marine products,"" but in addition to these, the shop also carries a wide array of specialty products from the Goto Islands. In Kyushu, one of the main marine products produced is foods made from flying fish, known locally as ""ago."" You'll also find an abundant variety of other unique Goto Islands products here, such as Goto udon noodles, kankoro mochi, and local alcoholic beverages. In addition, the market sells product sets perfect for giving as a traditional Japanese ochugen mid-summer gift or oseibo year-end present. You can also find camellia products like camellia oil and soap here, as well as folk crafts such as traditional Goto baramon kites."

Nagasaki Areas

around-area-map

This hidden corner of the country is rural Japan at its best, where underground activity is to thank for active volcanoes and bubbling natural hot springs along the Shimabara Peninsula as well as the crystal clear waters of the Goto Islands off the west coast. Less well known than Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park, Nagasaki commemorates its own past at the Nagasaki Peace Park, which sits alongside the charming Meganebashi stone bridge and a mix of religious buildings with beautiful architecture, such as the Zen Buddhist Sofukuji Temple, the Confucian Shrine, and the Oura Christian Church.
