The shop sells confections like Saga's renowned ""Ogi Yokan"" red bean jelly bars covered with a crunchy layer of sugar, ""Furusato Monaka"" red bean jam wafer cakes, and ""Maruboro"" pancakes. The shop is adjoined by a restaurant serving Japanese set meals (meal orders require an advance reservation)."

A confectionery store founded in 1696. It's famous for its marubolo sweets, made by improving on a similar version used as a preserved food for Portuguese sailors that was introduced to Japan long ago. It is made with consideration for the characteristics of three carefully selected ingredients: flour, sugar, and eggs. Their Japanese sweets with lovely, elegant colors reflecting a traditional seasonal feel and Western sweets like marguerites aux amandes are popular.

    Saga Kashima-shi Furueda 1695-1
A shop that manufactures and sells Yutoku Inari-jinja Shrine's specialty, Inari Yokan. Look for the red signage with a huge tube of Inari Yokan. Inari Yokan is an additive-free, artificial color-free white yokan sweet bean jelly containing azuki beans. It has won the Gold Medal and the Honorary President Award at the National Confectionery Exposition. Made from high quality azuki beans and agar, the moderately sweet treat is popular with a wide range of people. They also sell yokan in rectangular blocks.

A Japanese sweet shop founded in 1899 famous for its yokan bean jelly, in particular its own special version that has been made with the same traditional methods since the Edo period. Other popular items include sweets like Torayaki Sokan and Muraoka Monaka. Their marubolo is made with flour from Saga Prefecture and is known for its unique, soft texture. There are six kinds of yokan: ogura, benineri, honneri, kibizato, matcha, and green pea.

Currently, the sweets can be stored in the refrigerator for up to six months by flash freezing."

    Saga Karatsu-shi Honmachi 1513-17
A historic Japanese sweet shop founded in 1850. Round Shoro Manju buns are Karatsu's signature sweet. Carefully baked one by one on copper plates, you'll love the hand-made flavor that has not changed since the shop's founding. We also recommend their Matsura with a mixture of white azuki and tebo beans, as well as their Shoroji; it's made by blending white azuki beans with carefully selected koshian bean paste and letting the mixture solidify in a mold.

Saga Areas

around-area-map

Away from the fast-paced cities of mainland Japan, Kyushu’s Saga prefecture offers quaint towns and cities known for their traditional crafts, particularly ceramics. Rich in kaolin (a type of clay), Saga became the homeland of Arita ware, a delicate, decorative porcelain that is now celebrated worldwide and can be discovered in the towns of Arita, Imari, and Karatsu.
