About a 15-minute walk from the JR Kotohira Station, this art museum, with a magnificent view of Mt. Zozu, is located in this scenic area. It has on permanent display the works of the hometown artist, Wada Kunibo, and the potter, Omori Terushige. The works of Wada Kunibo, who was active in many different genres, many with a sense of familiarity, such as his packaging design of a local Kagawa confection. The museum has a cafe, allowing visitors to rest and enjoy a little leisurely hour after viewing the exhibit. This quiet cafe offers one of Kagawa's specialty sweets, kyuman, and coffees and teas.

This udon restaurant is located in Manno Town in Nakatado County, Kagawa Prefecture and is said to be the first restaurant to start serving “soy sauce udon.” When you order soy sauce udon, the first things brought to the table are a large radish and a surigane grating dish. You grate the radish yourself and use it to top the udon, then pour on the soy sauce. The plump, springy noodles, sweet soy sauce, and juicy radish combine to produce a refreshing taste.

    Kagawa Nakatado-gun Manno Cho Yoshino
This is a small park along the edges of the largest pond ever created as a reservoir for irrigation in Japan, the Manno Pond. Along the northern banks of the pond, visitors can enjoy watching fireflies, while strolling along the gentle walking ways. The park is designated as one of the top 50 new scenic spots in Kagawa prefecture. From springtime through summer, the park is seasonally dotted with peonies, irises, azaleas, and other blooming flowers. About 30 years ago, the fireflies had all but disappeared. However, through various creative means of building a water mill, and a stream, to which the insects naturally gravitate, the designers’ efforts paid off, and now this park shines as the hotaruno-sato, the home of the firefly. The best time to see the fireflies are from late May through early June. During this season in which there are various local summer events going on, tours are offered that make for wonderful outings.

This is a dye shop at the foot of Konpira Shrine. This historic shop has carried on the traditional Kagawa prefectural art of Sanuki nori-zome (dyeing with glue) for over 100 years. Amidst the current trend of digital print dyes, the Sanuki nori-zome still carefully and painstakingly dyes each fabric by hand using the rice starch. The brightly colored patterns are created by placing rice starch where the color should not adhere. This warm deep-nuanced dyes are used for many prominent occasions, such as for the flags of Shikoku Konpira Kabuki Daishibai theater, the costumes for the ceremonial shishimai lion dances and for the festive flags for fishing boat decking.

This is a local folk museum, about a three-minute walk from the great red gate to the Zentsuji Temple. Exhibited here are around 1000 historical, and anthropological artifacts that are related to around 800 archaeological items unearthed from within Zentsuji. These artifacts were formerly housed in the historic Zentsuji City Kaikosha, military club; an Important Cultural Property built in 1877. However, in 2005 they were moved here, the Akamonsuji, to conserve and repair said property as an important cultural property. Among the archaeological findings from the Paleolithic age to the civil war ear are many invaluable items important to the study of Japan's history.

This restaurant has been operating here for three generations, and customers can enjoy handmade udon noodles, mochi rice cakes, and onigiri rice balls. The white miso zoni udon noodles, only served in the winter from November to March, are the restaurant's take on white miso zoni, a popular local dish in Shikoku. Be sure to try it if you come during this time.

Kagawa Areas

around-area-map

Japan’s smallest prefecture, Kagawa, may take up just a small corner of Shikoku, but it has grown increasingly popular with the recognition of Naoshima, its "art island" in the Seto Inland Sea between Shikoku and Honshu. Just a stone’s throw from the islands, mainland Kagawa’s prefectural capital, Takamatsu, holds history in its castle ruins and its pride and joy, Ritsurin Garden, is known as one of the country’s best gardens.
