The Yakuo-ji Temple is a Koya-san Shingon Buddhist temple located in Okugawauchi, Minami-cho, Tokushima Prefecture. It is the 23rd temple visited on the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage; the temple’s formal name is Iozan Muryoju-in. According to legend, the temple was founded in 726 by the Buddhist monk Gyoki on the orders of the Emperor Shomu. The main object of veneration at the Yakuo-ji Temple is a statue of the Yakushi Nyorai Buddha (Medicine Buddha), and praying at the temple is believed to be very effective at warding off evil. The main hall is reached by two flights of stone steps: the Onna-yaku Zaka (33 steps) and the Otoko-yaku Zaka (42 steps). Further on, the Yugi-to pagoda houses an exhibition room and observation platform; downstairs, pilgrims worship by walking round the Yakushiji Sanzon (a triad of three Buddha statues).

The Tairyu-ji Temple is the 21st temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. According to tradition, the Temple was founded towards the end of the 8th century on the orders of Emperor Kammu. Legend has it that, when Kobo Daishi was aged around 19, he engaged in a devotional practice called Kokuzo-gumonji-ho by chanting a mantra one million times on top of a peak called Mt. Shashin, which is located around 600 meters southeast of the Temple precincts. This peak can be viewed while traveling on the ropeway that leads up to the Tairyu-ji Temple; a bronze statue of Kobo Daishi engaged in his religious devotions has been installed there.

Visited this temple as part of my 88 Temple Pilgrimage. When I visited, the only options were to either walk or take the cable car. The cable car costs ¥2400 for the round trip, but if you take your...

"This museum with its focus on sea turtles is one of only a handful worldwide. ""Caretta"" is another name for loggerhead turtles. The museum explains sea turtle ecology through fossils and panel displays. Recently hatched baby sea turtles are on display in their own special tank, and you can see rare sea turtle varieties in the facility's Large Turtle Pool and the Floating Sea Turtle Hall. On holidays they hold special programs that let you feed the turtles and get close to the hatchlings. "

This amazing museum is named after the scientific term for loggerhead sea turtles. Every year between May and August, loggerhead turtles come to lay eggs in the sand of Ohama beach, which is just a...

The Tairyuji Ropeway connects the Washi-no-Sato roadside station rest area in Naka Town, Naka County, Tokushima Prefecture with the Tairyu-ji Temple, which is the 21st temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. With a total length of 2,775 meters, it is the longest ropeway in Western Japan. The Ropeway crosses the Naka River (a Class A major river) and passes over 600-meter-high hills. In the past, pilgrims could only travel to the Tairyu-ji Temple to worship by ascending a steep mountain path, a serious obstacle that was known colloquially as the “pilgrim slide” because it was so difficult to climb up. Following the construction of the Ropeway, it was possible for larger numbers of pilgrims to visit the Temple.

One of the longest ropeways I’ve ever been on. The views were amazing and the destination was beautiful. Staff was very friendly and knew their stuff.

This is a Koyasan Shingon school temple in Aratano-cho, Anan City, Tokushima Prefecture and is 22nd temple of the 88 sacred places on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. The origin of this temple is said to be that, at this site, Kobo Daishi found a Bhaisajyaguru and carved his own statue of it, building the temple and making it the principal object of worship. The milky water that welled up at this time (it is now clear and colorless) became known as Kobo’s Miracle-working Water effective for all kinds of ailments and many worshippers put it in containers and take it home. The main hall, which was reconstructed in the middle of the Edo period, has a painted ceiling depicting the traditional themes of natural Japanese beauty.

"This shrine is beloved by the nickname ""Nekogami-sama."" The grounds of the temple, which is known as the patron shrine of competitions and wishes, contain around 10,000 manekineko (lucky cat figures) that have been offered to the temple. A famous legend about a bakeneko (a cat spirit from Japanese folklore) has been passed down at the shrine for more than 330 years since the late 1600s. It is one of the three most famous of such legends in Japan, with the other two being from Arima and Nabeshima."

This temple is the 4th of the Shikoku Bekkaku 20 Temples. At some point people began calling it Saba Daishi (“mackerel great priest”), saying that praying at the temple for three years while abstaining from eating mackerel would grant wishes, cure diseases, and grant happiness. The temple has lodgings for temple visitors and those on the Shikoku Pilgrimage. Religious services are held starting at 6 a.m. while goma rituals are held starting at 7 p.m. Visitors can also listen to Buddhist sermons by the chief priest and copy sutras. The temple is a truly place where people can purify and discipline the heart.
