  • Iya-no-Kazurabashi Bridge
    Travel / Tourism
    Tokushima Pref. Miyoshishi Nishiyayamamurazentoku 162-2
Designated as an Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property of the country, the 45 meter long and two meter wide suspension bridge crosses the clear running waters of the Iya River at a height of 14 meters above the water’s surface. The bridge is made of hardy kiwi vines that grow wild in the cold mountains and are replaced once every three years. Various views exist as to why the bridge was originally built, one of which says that it was constructed by fugitives of the Taira clan who, in order to prevent attackers getting close, built it out of vines so they could quickly cut it down. Another probable story says that it was made by the saint, Kobo Daishi, who used to roam the valleys of Iya, in order to help stricken villagers.

Unpenji, and it is the 66th temple of the Shikoku 88-temple Pilgrimage. It has the highest altitude of all the temples in the Shikoku Pilgrimage. On the temple grounds, the principal image joins a standing statue of Vaisravana and other National Important Cultural Properties, and you’ll also find a statue of Gohyakurakan, a “wish-granting eggplant,” and other items worth seeing. This temple is known for its beautiful fall foliage, and a ropeway operates from the foot of the mountain.

One of Japan’s three hidden valleys, Iya is a steep valley spreading out at the foot of the Shikoku Mountains. The perfectly formed V-shape valley and majestic landscape with the emerald green of the Iya River weaving its way along the valley floor are sights worth seeing. In autumn it is known as a picturesque spot for the viewing of colorful autumn foliage due to the way in which the whole valley side turns red from the valley floor to the top. Perched up high on a cliff above the Iya River is the Statue of a Peeing Boy, said to be where children and travelers to the region would see who is the bravest while standing on this precarious rock.

This shrine is Japan’s best shrine for getting rid a possession by an inugami (dog spirit). It is also known for answering prayers for recovery from illness and family well-being. It is notable for ritual prayers passed down for generations that use kinpei (a ritual wand with golden paper streamers) and for the vocalization methods used to recite them. The path to the main shrine building, which built as if it was linked with the mountain, offers some truly sublime views.

The Heike clan built this bridge about 800 years ago in order to get access to their horse-riding grounds in Mt. Tsurugi for training. It is also called the “male bridge, female bridge” and the “couple’s bridge” as there are two vine bridges which run in parallel beside each other. Immediately upstream of the female bridge, there is a “wild monkey” rope bridge where you traverse the valley by pulling the rope manually—it will be a valuable experience.

Also known as the ""Inner Sanctuary of Konpira,"" the temple is one of the stations on the Shikoku 20 Bekkaku Temple Pilgrimage and is visited by many pilgrims traveling the route. The temple is famous for its ceremonies such as an esoteric star ceremony which involves praying to the celestial body which will govern your fortunes for the year; and a memorial service for old chopsticks held on August 4th, the day of chopsticks.
