    This river is part of the Fushinogawa River system. It’s known as the resemblance to Kyoto's Kamogawa River and the west side of city around the river called “Nishi no Miyako (western city) by city's planning in Muromachi era. The river is lined with about 200 Yoshino cherry trees, making it a famous local cherry blossom viewing spot. Every year from late May through early June, the area is filled with the National Natural Monument Genji fireflies, bringing crowds of observers.

    "This is a reconstruction of the hermitage where Santoka Taneda, a wandering haiku poet, spent his time from 1932 to 1938 based on a plan drawn by Reireika Chikaki, who was a familiar visitor at the time. The name ""Gochuan"" was taken from words that appear in the Lotus Sutra. Along with the garden and a rest area with a buried earthen jar that makes sound when water drips into it, it is open to visitors free of charge in memory of Santoka. There are many sights to see, such as a monument with a poem written by Santoka's teacher Seisensui Ogiwara next to the building, an arbor, and a well used by Santoka."

    This museum was completed as a prefectural government office building in 1916. It displays documents about the Yamaguchi prefectural government. The main rooms are characterized by a bold adoption of Japanese and Oriental traditions and the latest European and American designs in detailed design, such as the ceiling center decorations, sculptures using curves and dimensions, and woodworking techniques around the doorway frame and ceiling. It is now open to the public as a prefectural government library along with the old prefectural assembly hall, and is also used for filming movies.

  • Main Gate of Former Yamaguchi-Han Office

    This is the main gate of the Yamaguchi administration building, which was built when the clan office was moved from Hagi to Yamaguchi in 1864. A yakuimon (gate with gable roof constructed with two square or rectangular main posts and two square or circular secondary posts), about 6.8 meters high and 10 meters wide, stands in a part of the site of the present Yamaguchi Prefectural Office. It is surrounded by what were the latest Western-style castles from the end of the Tokugawa shogunate, and the moat that made up part of it still exists. Normally the side gate is open, but when the main gate is opened for historical events, it is possible to see the majestic figure of Mt. Konomine in front of the gate. In 1912, the new prefectural government building was completed and the main gate was built to the east, but it still serves as an entrance from the west.

    These are the ruins of the former residence of the medieval master painter Sesshu. It is said that he lived here at the invitation of the Ouchi clan when he visited around the age of 40. In 1467, Sesshu came to China on a Japanese mission ship, learned painting techniques of coloring and breaking ink (a traditional technique of Chinese painting), and returned to Japan. He is said to have remained in Yamaguchi until his death, working on his art and training his students. The building fell into disrepair after the Meiji period (1868-1912), but it was restored in 1884 using old wood from an old shrine. It is now registered as a city-designated historic site.

  • Chuya Nakahara Poem Monument

    "This monument is to Chuya Nakahara, a poet from Yamaguchi who ended his short life in a distant and foreign land. Along Nishikigawa-dori Street, which is lined with inns and hotels in Yuda, one of Chuya's representative works, ""Doyo (nursery song),"" one of his unpublished poems, is inscribed with letters copied from his own manuscript. This poem was written in 1933 and is famous for its inclusion in Japanese elementary school language textbooks. In the city, in addition to Nishikigawa-dori Street, there are poetry monuments in Inoue Park, Takada Park and Narutaki Chomonkyo Gorge."

    "This is the factory for ""Ouchi Dolls"" that have been popular in Yamaguchi since long ago. The company manufactures and sells ""Ouchi Dolls,"" a traditional craft that is said to have been born from the heartwarming story of Hiroyo Ouchi and his wife, the founder of the Ouchi family's revival, as well as Ouchi-nuri lacquerware, which tells the story of the past of Yamaguchi, said to be the Kyoto of the west. Ouchi-nuri, a traditional technique using lacquer, was born as a symbol of luxurious and gorgeous Ouchi culture. It is characterized by a color of lacquer called ""Ouchi vermilion,"" which is neither red nor brown, and the Ouchi rhombus, the family crest of the Ouchi family, is decorated on it. In the workshop inside the store, you can observe the decoration process of Ouchi lacquerware."

    "This specialty shop sells specialties, souvenirs, traditional crafts, and special products from Yamaguchi Prefecture, where the bounties of the mountains and the sea are abundant. In addition to new products that have gained broad appeal in the media and classic marine products, it also offers Hagi-yaki pottery and Ouchi-nuri lacquered crafts. On Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings, a ""produce market"" is held that sells fresh vegetables produced by local farmers with all their heart."

    "This ancient shrine is located to the south of Noda Shrine. It was built in 1503 by Yoshioki Ouchi, the 30th head of the Ouchi clan. It is famous for its arrangement, which is unique to the Yamaguchi region, with a main worship hall at the towering gate. There are many ""kaerumata"" (sculptures that look like frog's legs) around it, indicating the process of transition from the flat design characteristic of the Muromachi period (1336-1573) to the thicker design of the next period. It is designated as an important cultural property of Japan along with the main hall, the two-storied gate and the hall of worship connected by a corridor."

    The Kokuga was the name of the government office where government officials called Kokushi would perform their duties starting in the late 7th century. While many provincial offices were relocated or reduced due to the change and decline of the Ritsuryo system after the Heian period the Suo office came under control of Todaiji Temple starting in the Kamakura period and survived until the early modern period. The Suo Kokuga was presumed to have been the central government building of the local region and governed the entire provincial region, the port in the Hamanomiya area, and as far west as the Ohi embankment. It was the first government provincial office site in the country to have been designated a National Historic Site. The presumed located of the government office is now maintained as a park.

    Hoshoan (meaning a fragrant pine retreat) was built in 1991 on the grounds of a former monks' quarter. Sugiwara no Michizane (845-903) revived the practice of enjoying tea in the 9th century imperial court. (Tea at the time tasting more medicinal that what is currently enjoyed.) This tea house was built in honor of that tradition. The Hoshoan is actually a small traditional tea house located on the eastern side of the garden but sitting opposite the tea house is a large two-story building. Both buildings overlook a beautiful garden featuring a stream which is home to a number of carp. The admission fee to the tea house includes matcha green tea and seasonal traditional Japanese sweets. The proper method for enjoying your tea is to take the bowl with your right hand, place it on your right palm, and then to turn the bowl twice clockwise. In doing this you can avoid drinking the tea from the front of the bowl.

    山あいの田園風景広がる集落の中にある臨済宗のお寺。大きくはないが、もみじの木が多く、紅葉の時期は綺麗だろうと思った。本堂の両翼には大きな椿の古木もあった。保存協力金や参拝料をお納めする必要はなかった。ただ、決して観光地ではなく、三脚を使ったカメラ撮影禁止、飲食禁止、ペットを連れた散歩お断り等、いろいろ注意事項が書かれた看板があちこちに立てられていた。
