    This is the birthplace of Murakami Navy that boasted power in the Seto Inland Sea from the Nanboku-cho period to the civil wars period. Many historical sites remain such as Innoshima Suigun Castle and Konrenji Temple, housing the Navy tomb. On the other hand, it is also known as the island of Go because it is the home of Honinbo Shusaku, a Go player who represents Japan. Materials relating to Honinbo Shusaku and Go are exhibited at the Honinbo Shusaku Go Memorial Hall.

    This is the tourist information center located in Setoda Town, Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. It provides tourist information on Hirayama Ikuo Museum of Art, Kousanji Temple, the town and also general information on the Shimanami Kaido Expressway. There are various pamphlets and sightseeing maps available. Bicycles for both adults and children are available for rental at a fee. There are many other services such as coin lockers, free air pumps for bicycles and convenient services for cyclists. Free Wifi provided.

    Hiroshima Mihara-shi Yahatacho Miyauchi 7
    This historic and ancient Shinto shrine is said to have been founded in 769 when government official Wake no Kiyomaro transferred a god from the Usa Hachimangu shrine here in order to pray for his exoneration after he incurred the wrath of a politically-connected monk. In ancient times, the shrine prospered as the guardian shrine of the Yawata-no-sho estate as well as the guardian shrine of all Bingo Province (now eastern Hiroshima Prefecture). The shrine’s woodcuts depicting and Sukhavati sutra and wooden komainu guardian lion-dogs are said to have been donated by the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa in the Muromachi period and have been designated National Important Cultural Property. During the Tensho era (1573-1593), the mighty samurai lord Toyotomi Hideyoshi visited the shrine and is said to have personally planted a cherry tree on the grounds.

    広島県の桜の名所が満開になったので行って来ました。場所は三原ですが久井ICから府中の境目にあり、西の吉野と呼ばれる「しだれ桜」の名所として有名です。到着するも駐車場は満杯で空き待ち後に観光。何故か?豊臣秀吉が手植えしたと伝えられたしだれ桜の切り株がありました。参道側には朱塗りの橋があり、「やはた川自然公園」の中心にあり、重文に指定され見所満載でよかったです。

    Said to have been founded in the middle of the Heian period, Taisanji Temple is also called “Tenjinbo.” The temple has a Higiri Jizo statue, and many students come to pray for success when they have exams. To the left of the precincts there’s stone monkey images known as the “Goen monkeys.” Their funny gestures are the opposite of Nikko’s three monkeys who “See no evil, speak no evil, and hear no evil.” This invites good luck.

    Kairyuji Temple was established in 1245. In the temple there are the tombstone of Takemoto Yatayu, a Bunraku performer and the Okyozuka monument. As the Bunraku (classical Japanese puppetry) uses the hands, praying while stroking a certain part of the monument is said to improve a person’s artistic skills. A thousand-armed Kannon is the temple’s principle image, and it is an important prefectural cultural property. Other temple treasures including statues of Fudo Myoo (Acala, one of the Five Wisdom Kings) and Amida Nyorai (Amitabha Tathagata) are also must-sees. It is approximately a 10-minute drive from JR Onomichi Station.

    This beach is located in the Seaside Sport Park in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, and has almost 800 meters of white sand beach along with crystal clear waters, leading it to be chosen as one of Japan’s top 88 beaches. There are shower facilities, locker rooms and restaurants on site. The beach is a famous location to watch the sunset and draws large crowds. It is open from July to August every year.

    This Buddhist temple is located a 10-minute walk from Onomichi Station on the JR San'yo Main Line. Records state the ancient temple was founded in the Gen’o era (1319-1321). Said to have been founded by an apprentice of the wandering priest Niso, the temple is famous for its unusual grave containing three heads. There once were three thieves who gave their spoils to the poor, but eventually they were executed for their crimes in 1828. Their heads were buried next to the main temple, and local residents came to honor the thieves. It is said that praying to the grave can cure one of illnesses from the neck up, and even today an unending stream of people visit the grave seeking its miraculous power.

    尾道駅から徒歩15分ほど。 1328年創建の時宗遊行派の寺院。本尊は阿弥陀如来。本堂は木造瓦葺き。本堂の左手には処刑された3人の義賊の首を祀った「三つ首様」と呼ばれる墓がある。この三ツ首様は首から上の病気平癒に御利益があるとのこと。

    This ramen shop is located in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. It is famous for its Onomichi ramen, notable for its flat-cut aged fresh noodles and a broth subtly flavored with small fry. Equipped with both counter and table seating, the restaurant is visited by many ramen lovers. Lines often form around lunchtime.

    We tried the special ramen with thick slices of pork and it was delicious. The restaurant from outside does not look very appealing but do not be fooled by the appearance!

    A daifuku (sweet bean pasted-stuffed rice cake) shop located in Innoshima Ohashi Park on Innoshima Island in Onomichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture. The shop’s Hassaku daifuku, an Onomichi specialty, are particularly renowned, and fans from around the country come here to enjoy them. Hassaku daifuku have a fresh flavor and are made Hassaku oranges stocked from contract farms on Innoshima Island and Ikuchi-jima Island wrapped in shiroan white bean jam covered with mochi glutinous rice. The shop also sells a variety of other fruit daifuku such as seasonal strawberry and grape daifuku. The shop has an eat-in space with free coffee and a view of Innoshima-ohashi Bridge.

    ちょっと分かりにくい場所にあり、迷子になりました。レストランとして利用されていた施設を改装したような感じです。時期により、イチゴ、はっさく等の大福があり、店内で食べることもできます。

The observation platform offers a view of the countless islands of the Seto Inland Sea, and is a famous spot to watch the setting sun. It's also a popular cherry blossom-viewing spot, with its beautiful cherry blossom scenery in spring.

    工場に併設されたカフェです。 工場見学が意外と楽しく、その余韻に浸ったままカフェを利用しました。 値段は高めですが、お客さんは少ないのでとてもゆっくりできました。 パンの購入もできますが、訪れた時間が遅かったのか、ほとんど売り切れていました。 空港を利用する時にまた行きたいです。

    Hiroshima Onomichi-shi Higashikubocho 8-40
    Records state this ancient temple was founded by Icchin, known as the sixth Yugyo Shonin (“Traveling Saint”) in Japan, at the end of the Kamakura period. The temple’s name at that time was written with different characters, and a stone pillar as well as a temple name plaque inscribed with this older form of the name can still be found on the grounds. The main temple building, built in 1353, is the oldest extant temple building affiliated with the Jishu sect of Pure Land Buddhism founded by the priest Ippen. An excellent example of Pure Land Buddhist architecture, it has been designated a National Important Cultural Property. The temple’s main building is also famous for its simple square pillars topped by plain horizontal members; known as “crying dragon” pillars, when tapped they produce a distinctive, percussive sound.

It is useful to visit the information center before visiting Onomichi having a vast range of pamphlets and coupons. It also has a bicycle air pump and can be used as a base for cyclers. Coin lockers and free Wifi is available as well.

    It is a rocky mountain 226.9 meters above sea level that is located in Innoshima in Onomichi City. It is known to be one of the foremost viewpoints among the Shimanami Sea Route, and from the top of the mountain there is a 360-degree outlook to the Innoshima-ohashi Bridge and surrounding islands. Also on the top of the mountain is the Kannon temple built by Yoshimitsu Murakami, the 6th generation owner of the Innoshima Murakami Navy. The 700 stone figures of Buddha made by Denroku Kashihara, the founder of the Ikkankyo religion and his disciples are a highlight.

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
