  • Kurobuchi
    Travel / Tourism
    Hiroshima Yamagata-gun Akiotacho Yokogo
Place of Scenic Beauty-designated Sandankyo Gorge has been awarded three stars, the highest amount possible, by France’s authoritative Blue Guide travel guide. This pool in the gorge is counted among the gorge’s five most beautiful areas, alongside Sarutobi, Nidan Falls, Sandan Waterfall, and Mitsutaki Falls. Boasting some of the best scenery in the gorge, the pool’s name literally translates to “Black Pool” and is derived from the black appearance of the water at its deepest depths. Enclosed by 100-meter-high cliffs on either side, ferry boats can take visitors across the water and give you the chance to look up at the towering, majestic walls from the surface of the river.
  • Sarutobi
    Travel / Tourism
    Hiroshima Yamagata-gun Akiotacho Yokogo
This scenic destination is located in the almost exact center of Sandankyo Gorge, a beautiful gorge filled with clear water and lush greenery. Visitors to the gorge can enjoy some of the most spectacular gorge scenery in western Japan, but this popular area in particular is counted among the gorge’s five most stunning. A stretch of river enclosed by cliffs over 20 meters tall on either side, ferry boats travel back and forth across it. The area’s name literally means “Monkey Jump” and is derived from the groups of monkeys which once jumped the cliffs. Notably, instead of a ferry using oars like other similar areas in the gorge, visitors can also cross the river here via a rope bridge. Nidan Falls, located close by, is isolated and can only be reached by riding a ferry here.
  • Nidan Falls
    Travel / Tourism
    Hiroshima Yamagata-gun Akiotacho
This waterfall is located in Sandankyo Gorge, one of the most secluded areas in western Japan, and here visitors can enjoy walking in a world resembling a traditional landscape painting. The powerful waterfall gushes with a thunderous roar and can be reached by taking a ferry boat from Sarutobi. Counted as one of the five most beautiful areas in Sandankyo Gorge, its name literally means “Two Tier Falls,” and indeed it once had two tiers, but in 1988, the rock wall of the first tier collapsed after a heavy downpour, and today the waterfall only has one tier. Visitors can actually watch as the water of the falls prizes away the falls’ rock wall. The falls are located around a two and a half hour walk from the main entrance to Sandankyo Gorge. The path to the falls may be closed due to natural disaster, and thus visitors are encouraged to check in advance.
  • Sandan Waterfall
    Travel / Tourism
    Hiroshima Yamagata-gun Akiotacho Yokogo
This waterfall is considered the most beautiful place in Special Place of Scenic Beauty-designated Sandankyo Gorge, a gorge resembling a traditional landscape painting. The powerful, 30-meter-high waterfall is picturesque and is frequently depicted in postcards and other materials from Akiota Town in Hiroshima Prefecture. Consisting of three tiers, its beauty impresses on viewers the majesty of nature. Also famous as one of the best places to enjoy fall foliage in the country, in autumn visitors can take in scenery interweaving vivid crimson and gold leaves with the spectacular waterfall, and the walking path along the river bustles with tourists. The falls are around a two and a half hour walk from the main entrance to Sandankyo Gorge or 30 minutes from the Mizunashi Parking Lot.
  • Kurobuchiso
    Gourmet / Alcohol
    Hiroshima Yamagata-gun Akiotacho Shiwagi 1729
This teahouse stands in National Special Place of Scenic Beauty-designated Sandankyo Gorge. Situated on the bank of Kurobuchi, counted as one of the gorge’s five most beautiful areas, the teahouse serves light foods and beverages. As Sandankyo Gorge is blocked by heavy snows in winter, the teahouse is open from April to November. In summer, the teahouse’ nagashi-somen noodle slide, which makes use of the same Sandankyo Gorge spring water which has been deemed the most famous spring water in Japan, is wildly popular. Also be sure to try the summer-only charcoal grilled yamame trout. The teahouse is located around an hour walk from the main entrance to Sandankyo Gorge. As the teahouse stands next to the ferry landing and is adjoined by toilets, it’s the perfect place to take a mid-hike break, and many people stop by here.
  • Mitsutaki Falls
    Travel / Tourism
    Hiroshima Yamagata-gun Kitahiroshimacho
This waterfall is considered one of the five most beautiful areas in Sandankyo Gorge, one of the most secluded areas in western Japan. Located around a four-hour-walk from the main entrance to Sandankyo Gorge, the waterfall is also around 200 meters downstream from Hijiri Lake and consists of five tiers and three bends. The powerful waterfall is 31-meters-tall in total and the depth of its plunge basin is around 3.5 meters at the center. Flowing between large boulders called the Tatamiiwa, the waterfall is surrounded by virgin conifer and broadleaf forest and visitors rave the area resembles something out of a traditional landscape painting. The largest waterfall in Sandankyo Gorge, it has also been designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty.

The waters of the bathhouse’ hypotonic alkaline cold mineral spring are said to beautify the skin and treat such ailments as nerve pain, muscle soreness, and joint pain. In order to ensure customer comfort, the water in all of the baths is completely replaced daily. The heated pool area has large windows letting in plenty of natural light, and has a four course 25 meter pool. The bathhouse also holds children’s swimming classes.
  • Hakuundo Cave
    Travel / Tourism
    Hiroshima Shobara-shi Higashishirocho Taishakumido 1940
This limestone cave is one of the most spectacular found in Taishaku Gorge, which is in turn counted as one of the 100 Landscapes of Japan. Beyond its narrow entrance, the cave extends back 200 meters and is five-meters-wide and 20-meters-high. The entire area was once limestone tableland; extensive natural erosion over the ages has turned it into a sprawling karst plateau, and it is believed countless vast limestone caverns occupy the area underground. The stalactites, stalagmites, stone columns, and other structures inside the cave have been preserved in their natural state for visitors to enjoy. A wooden walkway and lights have been installed throughout the cave, making it possible to take in the cave’s natural beauty in comfort and safety.

Hiroshima Areas

around-area-map

There is more than meets the eye awaiting any Hiroshima-bound traveler. Kicking off in Hiroshima city, the Peace Memorial Park, Hiroshima Castle, and Shukkeien Garden offer a couple of days of exploring; however, the real beauty lies along the southern coast of the prefecture. There, a series of islands spreads across the Seto Inland Sea: from the mysterious sea-submerged Great Torii Gate at Miyajima Island to the first half of the islands that connect Honshu to Shikoku via six spectacular suspension bridges.
