"This is the site of the residence of Naoya Shiga, the famous ""God of Novels. The building was designed by Naoya Shiga himself in the early Showa period (early 20th century), and is unique in that it was built in the sukiya (tea-ceremony room) style with Western influences. In 1978, the Nara Gakuen Educational Foundation acquired the building from the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare and opened it to the public as a museum and seminar house."

It contains materials connected with Daijo-in Temple, which was founded in 1087 and abandoned during the anti-Buddhist movement in the early Meiji Period (the middle of the nineteenth century). Open to the public free of charge, this museum displays a reconstructed model of what the temple looked like. A teahouse and conference rooms are available to rent.

This is a yomogi mochi rice cake specialty shop located on Sanjo-dori Street in Hashimoto Town, Nara City. The yomogi mochi is made from carefully selected locally grown produce. Hot rice is pounded swiftly according to traditional methods to make the soft and springy texture of the sweet. The shop is visited by many customers who come to see the skilled combination of the craftsmen turning and pounding the rice first hand.

The nicest, freshest mochi I’ve had in Japan (and I’ve tried a lot!) I also got to see them making the mochi which was really interesting.

Nara Pref. Narashi Kasuganochou Little Women
This is a mountain with an elevation of 342 meters located at the eastern tip of Nara Park. The entire mountain is covered in grass and since it has three small hills that look like conical hats, it is also called Mt. Mikasa (three-hat mountain). Visitors can see deer scattered around the mountain and the mountain makes for a beautiful sight in all four seasons including cherry trees in the spring and changing leaves in the autumn. Every year on the fourth Saturday in January the mountain is set on fire, and a launch of fireworks is used as a sign that the entire mountain is ablaze. This is one of Nara’s large events when there is syncretism of Shinto and Buddhism between Kasuga Taisha Shrine, Todaiji Temple, and Kofukuji Temple so as to pray for the peace and comfort of ancestors, Nara’s disaster prevention, and world peace as well as to announce the coming of spring.

    Travel / Tourism
Nara Pref. Narashi Zoushichou 406-1 in the Todaiji Temple
It is a Buddhist hall within the precinct of Todai-ji in Nara City and is designated as a national treasure of Japan. It is famous for the Shuni-e (water-drawing) Ceremony, known as a seasonal tradition held in early spring. Although it is now held in the third month of the solar calendar, it used to be an event held in the second month of the lunar calendar, which brought about the name Nigatsu-do, literally February Hall. The principal images are believed to be two eleven-faced Kannon statues, but they are absolute hidden statues and kept strictly out of public view.

This octagonal temple located inside the Kohfukuji Temple is designated an Important Cultural Property. As the ninth station in the Saigoku Kannon Pilgrimage, the temple is visited by an unending stream of worshippers. The temple was built in 813 by the noble Fujiwara no Fuyutsugu in prayer for the happiness in the next world of his father, Fujiwara no Uchimaro. The current temple was rebuilt in 1789, the fourth time the temple was rebuilt, in an old-fashioned style believed to be modeled after the Hokuendo Temple, also located inside the Kohfukuji. The two principle objects of worship enshrined inside the temple, the Seated Figure of Amoghapasa and the Standing Figures of the Four Heavenly Kings, were created by famed sculptor Kokei. The temple doors behind which these statues are hidden are only opened on October 17 each year during the Reading of the Mahaprajnaparamita Sutra.

Nara Areas

around-area-map

With a reputation almost as stellar as that of Kyoto, Nara is a must-visit for those searching for the remains of "traditional Japan." The largely green Nara city holds the majority of the prefecture’s treasures, such as the iconic Todai-ji Temple, in which a 15-meter tall Great Buddha sits, and Nara Park, where deer flock to befriend passersby. While mountains are by no means hard to come by in this area, for hiking with a reward, head to the Kii Mountains’ Yoshino district in spring, when the hillsides put on an impressive display of white and pink cherry blossoms.
