This local sake brewery has a 200-year history. The local favorite Onna Joshu gets its name from Otsuya-no-Kata, the first female lord of the famous Iwamura Castle. They participate in sake competitions and win awards at Gifu Prefecture's Shinshu Kanpyokai (National New Sake Appraising and Deliberating Fair) almost every year. They have free brewery tours where you can see the trolley track that was once used for transporting rice and sake. They also have tastings of their recent brews and hold an event to introduce their new sake to the world on a Sunday and public holiday in February.

Gifu Areas

around-area-map

Tucked away in the very center of Japan, Gifu prefecture houses mountains, old towns, and one of Japan’s greatest hot springs, Gero Onsen. A tour of the prefecture’s traditional architecture will take you from the mountain-enveloped wooden streets of Takayama to the mountain village of Shirakawago, where visitors can explore 250-year-old thatched roofed houses known as gassho-zukuri.
