    This historic district in Takayama City maintains the ambiance of an old merchant town. Sanmachi refers to the three streets running through the upper and lower parts of the district. It's also referred to as Sanmachi-dori. Commerce was essential to Takayama's growth as a castle town, and a distinctive street lined with traditional townhouses with black latticed doors developed in the Sanmachi area. It's been designated a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings and is a popular tourist spot. Today the charming traditional kominka houses along the street host establishments like souvenir shops, restaurants, and Japanese style cafes.

    A pass situated along National Route 158 traveling from Takayama to Matsumoto which is situated at the northern foot of Mt. Norikura 1,684 meters above sea level. Situated at the junction between the Norikura Skyline and Prefectural Route 485, the pass is a continuous stretch of sharp curves and steep slopes and is known as a difficult place to drive. Commanding a spectacular view of the Northern Japan Alps to the northeast and Mt. Hakusan to the west, in spring the entire mountain is enwrapped in light green Erman's birch leaves, while in fall maples and rowans dye it vivid, eye-catching colors.

    "This ancient Buddhist temple, located a 30-minute drive from JR Takayama Station, was founded some 1,200 years ago by Takaoka-shinno, one of the great monk Kobo Daishi 's 10 greatest disciples. The current temple was rebuilt after repeated fires destroyed the original complex. Serving as a dojo for Mt. Koya Shingon shuzen meditation, the temple teaches old fashioned mountain Buddhism. Also known as the ""Enku-butsu Temple,"" the temple's Enku-butsu-dera Treasure Hall, close to the Daiji-mon gate, is open to the public and displays a portion of the temple's treasures and 64 Enku-butsu statues such as a depiction of Two Faced Sukuna and Dharmapala (hall is closed in winter). The temple also offers day trip Buddhist training courses such as sermns, sutra copying, and meditation."

Exhibits other than their special exhibitions are free of charge, so anyone can drop by while using the Shinhotaka Ropeway. The work on display is inspired by the natural beauty of Hida and the Northern Alps. The gallery space is also available for rent.

It's a nice spot for a break and a bite to eat while looking up at the Daini Ropeway against the clear blue sky.

Limited availability items that are only sold there include Unkai Udon, Unkai Soba, and a ramen set with rice and a mix of local mushrooms. The spacious shop is often filled with tourists who've just enjoyed the spectacular view from the Shinhotaka Ropeway.

The shop's specialty is wasabi soft serve ice cream that's colored a refreshing green. It's lightly sweet with a pleasant wasabi aroma. Lots of people get it while taking a break or waiting for the ropeway. Other items include beef tendon ramen, Shinhotaka ramen, and ""black ramen"" with dark soup."

Some of the many items only available there include miniature toy cars and lapel pins replicating Japan's only two-story gondola. Their Meshinosai is a popular prepared product made of wood ear mushroom. The name means ""rice accompaniment"" in the local Hida dialect."

    This Information Center is a five-minute walk from Shinhotaka Onsen Station, the boarding point for the Shinhotaka Ropeway. They engage in a variety of activities that encourage sustainable tourism and international friendship while promoting tourism in Okuhida Onsenkyo and Kamitakara-cho. The trailhead for Mt. Yarigatake, Mt. Okuhotaka, and Mt. Nishihotaka starts nearby, and this is where you need to submit your itinerary when climbing. They also provide a wide range of sightseeing information for Hirayu Onsen, Shinhotaka Onsen, Kamitakara Highland, and Norikura.

    This Shinto shrine is across from Okuhida Onsenkyo and Tochio Onsen with their idyllic scenery. The primary god honored is Emperor Murakami, Japan's 62nd ruler. It is considered Okuhida's guardian shrine. On May 10th, its annual festival welcomes spring to snowy Okuhida Onsenkyo. After the ceremonies they hold traditional Hida Takayama performances of lion dances and traditional torigei featuring village youths in feathered headdresses called jagama dancing in a circle to the beat of a drum. It has been designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Gifu Prefecture.

    The Okuhida Hot Spring Resort is located in Okuhida Onsenkyo at an altitude of 1,200 m, about an hour from the Takayama Interchange on the Chubu Jukan Expressway, and is a popular destination for mountain climbers and highland resort guests. The hot springs are well known for their high-temperature, high-pressure geothermal hot springs, which allow visitors to relax while enjoying some of Okuhida's best scenery.

In the rest area inside the building, you can have fun operating railroad cars on the largest railway diorama in Gifu prefecture (extra charge). There is also a spacious restaurant where you can taste yakiniku set meals made with top-ranking Hida beef. There are numerous unique menu items, such as a bowl of rice topped with onsen tamago and raw egg, Hida beef curry, and the regional specialty pickles steak."

    This summertime garden can be viewed at Hida Funayama Snow Resoort Arkopia. It features about 200,000 sunflowers on a slope that's packed with skiers in winter. Lots of families come for the mid-August peak season when they set up the Himawari-komichi path through the flowers and a jumbo trampoline. With water games, activities blowing enormous bubbles, a specialty bazaar, and lots more, it's a Kuguno summer tradition.

    A lodge and campground on the Hiwada Highland with a view of Mt. Norikura and other Northern Alps peaks, as well as Mt. Ontake to the south. The Center Lodge in the middle of the campground has guest rooms and a public bath that those staying at the lodge or cottages can use for free. Its 1,300-meter highland location with comfortable midsummer temperatures of around 25 degrees centigrade is perfect for sports practice.

    This park is one of the Hida region's best-known cherry blossom viewing spots. It's said to have gotten its start with the transplanting of 500 saplings of seven cherry varieties grown at Mt. Yoshino in the late Nanbokucho period. Meiji period development and heavy rains during the Heisei period saw its area reduced. Today about 300 Yoshino and double weeping rosebud cherry trees line 600 meters of the Miyagawa River. They are lit up at night during the mid-April full bloom period, creating a marvelous atmosphere. It has been selected as one of the 33 Best Places to View Cherry Blossom in the Hida-Mino region.
