Akita Pref. Sembokushi Tazawakobonai Komagatake 2-1
This onsen hotel in Semboku City, Akita Prefecture allows day trips, and is popular with female visitors for its meticulous service and modern atmosphere. One can enjoy “gold” and “silver” source water in seven different baths. It is famous for an open air mixed bathing area where one can look out over the Sendachi River, offering the true charm of a secluded hot spring. Women can wear towels in the mixed bathing area. With the accommodation plan, guests can try the local kiritanpo (mashed rice pressed on a skewer and toasted) cuisine too.

Did a one day onset hopping in the area. This is one of our favourite. The onset overlooking the water is amazing just that it is for both male and female at all times. The view is still too amazing...

This statue is on the west bank of Lake Tazawa, in Aza-Katajiri Nishiki-cho Saimyoji, Semboku City. It's based on the Lake Tazawa legend of Princess Tatsuko, a young girl who prayed for eternal youth and beauty, and whose wish was granted when she drank the waters of a magical forest spring and was turned to a dragon, the guardian spirit of the lake.

I guess it is the most popular tourists round the lake. If you drive round the lake, dont just go there. There are other nice places around the lake.

The former miso and soy sauce brewery was founded in 1853. The brick storehouse, built in the middle of the Meiji period, gives an atmosphere of long ago. You can enter the building and view the fusuma (sliding doors), hand-painted by Nishimiya Reiwa, free of charge. In the black plastered warehouse once used for storage, you can taste miso soup and pickles. You should definitely try the additive-free, naturally produced goods.

You see many grain storage buildings, non combustible, throughout Japan, but this one really catches you attention. It is on the opposite end of town from the samurai houses.

This is a tourist facility in Semboku City, Akita Prefecture, established to promote the traditional Kakunodate craft of “Kabazaiku” (cherry bark art) which began as the craftwork of lower-grade samurai. Kabazaiku is characterized by the brilliant, deep coloring it gets from the bark of the mountain cherry tree, and is often used for making tea utensils and accessories. Inside the building Kabazaiku, handicraft, cultural and historical materials are on display, and the Kabazaiku creation demonstration corner is particularly popular. The building itself, made in the old Kakunodate architectural style, is a sight to see.

This Museum has an interesting collection which will enhance your knowledge of life and early industry in the Kakunodate district. During our visit there were also exhibitors of local crafts with...

This roadside station is along National Route 46. The direct sales center offers farm products brought fresh every morning. The Iseki Togei no Sato offers pottery classes. And since this is the only rest station on National Route 46, it is popular with long-distance drivers and has a large parking area.

15 minutes by car from Yatsu Station. A bare wood shrine with a modern feel located on the shore of Lake Tazawa in Saimyoji, Nishiki Town. The shrine’s proper name is the Kansagu. The shrine was named with Kansagu by Masudo Soshu, a retainer of Akita Domain, in 1769. Because of this fact, Lake Tazawa has come to be called Lake Kansa, as well as Lake Sako. The driftwood enshrined in the shrine resulted in its common nickname of Ukiki-jinja Shrine— “Driftwood Shrine.” The shrine building sticks out over Lake Tazawa, and nearby stands a figure of the legendary Tatsuko. The shrine is believed to provide luck with finding love and marriage and is visited by many women.

It makes a cute photo with the trees in autumn leaf, its decorative bridge and its nearby small, stone lantern. My wife had a look and walked away thinking shed been to a shop so ... shrine? Maybe...

In the Sengoku period, this residence of Kawarada Manor was used by the hereditary vassals of the Ashina Clan who transferred to Kakunodate, and it received 100 koku of rice for the main family and 50 for the branch family. It was built in the mid Meiji period, and it is styled after the warrior residences of the Edo period and their rich designs. The main residence’s roof features a merchant house design that is said to have been for fire prevention.

A historic building in Kobito-machi, Kakunodate-machi, Semboku City. It served as a lower ranked samurai residence during the Edo period and has been designated a Tangible Cultural Property of the prefecture. Admission is free and from spring to autumn they hold demonstrations of traditional Itaya Zaiku weaving. The house was famously the shooting location for the film, The Twilight Samurai.

This is a rare surviving modest residence of a low ranking samurai family built in 1860. I understand they were a family of scholars. Worth comparing with the grand mansion of a higher ranking...

Designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, there are still a number of samurai houses preserved, including the Aoyagi house. The area is also famed for cherry blossoms, with weeping cherry and other different cherry trees than Yoshino lining the streets. The white skunk cabbage blooms from mid-April through early May, and they hold many events for the Sashimaki Mizubasho Festival during that time.

The Hirafuku Memorial Museum of Art is an art museum in Omotemachi Kamicho, Kakunodate Town, Semboku City. The name of the building is derived from the Japanese painters Suian Hirafuku and Hyakusui Hirafuku, parent and child from Kakunodate. The building was designed by Hiroshi Oe, known for his architectural designs of the National Noh theater and Hosei University. Opened in 1988, it was built on the land where the North Satake family (Satake-hokke) of the Satake clan resided and where the old Kakunodate Junior High School building stood. There are pieces of work on display from Naotake Odano and other local artists and followers of Hirafuku, as well as other active young artists.

At the north end of the samurai houses sit this nice park area with building sitting to the rear, I did not know it was open for viewing the artist exhibited, but the grounds are great.

Akita Areas

around-area-map

Famed for its sake and samurai, Akita prefecture offers quintessential Japanese culture in a non-touristy setting. Alongside the celebrated rice paddies and historical sites of the region lies dramatic natural scenery in the form of the rugged coastline of the Oga Peninsula and the Dakigaeri Gorge, best visited in autumn, when the leaves begin to change color.
