  • Funabiki Canal
    Travel / Tourism
    Shimane Oki-gun Nishinoshimacho Mita
A canal connecting the inner sea's Mita Bay with its mountainous coast to the outer Sea of Japan. 340 meters long and 5.5 meters wide, it was built in 1914 and 1915. The area gets the name Funagoshi from the fact the boats were pulled over land from the inner sea to the outer sea until the canal was built. This major development linking the two bodies of water over the shortest possible distance brought major changes to fishing, industry, and life on the island. Major renovations widened it even further in 1964, and now fishing and sightseeing boats coming and going on the canal are a common sight on Nishinoshima.
  • The Fireflies of the Aka River Basin in Daito-cho
    Travel / Tourism
    Shimane Unnan-shi Daitocho
A colony of genjibotaru fireflies, also known as Akagawa fireflies. Tradition says about 250 years ago Matsudaira Harusato, the 7th feudal lord of the Matsue Domain, brought the fireflies from Kyoto and released them along the Akagawa River. You can still see them sparkling in the night today. They're at their best just after 8 p.m. from late May to late June. A one-meter wide, 100-meter long stone dike on the Akagawa River helps maintain a firefly-friendly environment. Besides Akagawa Hotaru Park, you can also see their faint light at Daito Tanabata Park and near Ayogawa Bridge.
  • Horikawa Canal
    Travel / Tourism
    Miyazaki Nichinan-shi Nishimachi 7
This canal connects the mouth of the Hiroto River to Aburatsu Port. The canal, built on the order of Obi Domain lord Ito Sukezane in 1686, took around two years to complete. Aburatsu has flourished since ancient times as a key port. The canal was built by Obi Domain to efficiently transport Obi cedar and serves as a symbol of Aburatsu. At the time it was built, canal excavation was no easy task, and it is said that digging out the bedrock below the vicinity of Ahiratsu Shrine was particularly difficult. The canal is about a 15-minute walk from Aburatsu Station. Today, the canal is used as a shooting location for movies, and as a shelter for fishing boats during typhoons.
  • Isuzu River
    Travel / Tourism
    Mie Ise-shi Ujitachicho 1
"This river is formed by the confluence of the two streams of the Shimaji River. Flowing from Mt. Kamiji, the river flows through the grounds of the Ise Jingu shrine before emptying into the ocean off of Futamigaura. According to legend, long ago the princess Yamatohime-no-Mikoto washed dirt from the hem of her skirt in this river, and thus it is also known as the ""Mimosuso River"" (""Skirt Washing River""). Down beyond the slope of the approach to Ise Jingu's inner shrine area, you can see a large washing area on the river paved with stones said to have been donated by Keishoin, mother of the shogun Tokugawa Tsunayoshi. Here visitors can purify themselves in the same way as can be done at the fountain washing areas many Shinto shrines provide. It is said the water flowing through the washing area symbolizes purity."
