Tanzan Shrine: Elegance Between the Mountains

- Within a 30-minute train ride from Nara City, this Shinto shrine that seems more like a temple is surrounded by over 3,000 maple trees and boasts amazing spring cherry blossoms, great summer greenery, beautiful autumn foliage and a romantic winter landscape. Though not among the most famous Shinto spots in Japan, Tanzan Shrine in Nara stands out for both historical and architectural qualities. The complex of buildings is located in the Tounomine Mountains next to the historical Sakurai city, the so-called “Nikko of Kansai”, which is constantly mentioned in the Man’yōshū (the oldest existing collection of Japanese poetry). The vermilion-lacquered facility has its origins traced to a Buddhist temple built in the Asuka Period (538 – 710). It was converted into a shrine during the Meiji Period (1868 – 1912), after the government made Shinto the official religion of the Japanese state.The Tanzan Shrine’s main attraction is a 17-meter tall 13-storied pagoda, the only of its kind in Japan. With an impressive variety of trees and flowers, it manages to stay elegant throughout all seasons. According to traditional beliefs, the shrine brings good fortune to couples – especially those who touch the Stone Seat of Bonding within the complex. The shrine also hosts the Kemari Matsuri (“Kickback Festival” in English) twice a year, on April 29 and in the second Sunday of November. - The country’s iconic flower, cherry blossoms,familiarly known as sakura, returns to announce the arrival of Spring 2020. Within few weeks between mid March to early April, starting from around Tokyo then down towards Kyushu region (South)and finally making it on its way up to Hokkaido (North), the country will be covered by flushes of pink. In this article, you will be able to see the destinations of the recommended places to see cherry blossoms as they bloom according to the forecast. ― 2020 Japan Cherry Blossom Forecast 2020 Japan Cherry Blossom Forecast Tokyo is expected to be the first place to see cherry blossom bloom starting around March 21st. Due to mild winter, southern part of Kyushu is expected to bloom later compared to previous years. It will reach its peak bloom within a week or so from its first appearance. If you are planning to travel during this beautiful season make sure to keep an eye on the latest forecast as it may change from time to time. Earth communication provider 1. Meguro River (Tokyo) Meguro River (Tokyo) With cherry blossom trees lining its banks, the Meguro River is one of Tokyo’s most popular cherry blossom viewing destinations. Around 800 trees extend almost four kilometers along the river, making it the perfect place to stroll, shop or relax at one of the many cafes. A cherry blossom festival coincides with the full bloom, although the end of the season when the petals are falling into the river is also magical. The Meguro River is 10 minutes’ walk from the Meguro Station or five minutes from the Nakameguro subway station. If you want to avoid traffic, there are less food stall near Meguro station so it is better to walk from there. Between Meguro station and Ikejiri-Ohashi station, there are food stalls and the cherry blossom trees in the evening are beautifully lighted up.Best time to visit: late March to early April 2. Ueno Imperial Gift Park (Tokyo) Ueno Imperial Gift Park (Tokyo) One of Japan’s oldest public parks, Ueno Park is home to around 1,200 cherry blossom trees and is the top cherry blossom viewing spot in the country. People come to lay out mats beneath the trees, enjoy a picnic and drink sake while admiring the stunning blooms. It’s easily accessed from Ueno Station and situated just across the street from the Park Exit. Best time to visit: around late MarchAnnual turnout: approximately 4 million people 3. Yoyogi Park (Tokyo) Yoyogi Park (Tokyo) An oasis in the city, Yoyogi Park is one of the largest urban parks in Tokyo and a popular hanami destination. Around 700 cherry trees are planted in the park, with people arriving early in the morning during the cherry blossom season to reserve a picnic spot beneath the trees and relax with family and friends. It’s just five minutes’ walk from Harajuku Station. Best time to visit: late March to early April 4. Chidorigafuchi (Tokyo) Chidorigafuchi (Tokyo) Chidorigafuchi is a moat outside the Imperial Palace that’s ignited by a 700-meter-long tunnel of cherry blossom trees during the spring. Their pink hues beautifully reflect on the moat’s waters, making it a popular place for people to stroll during the Chiyoda Sakura Festival and magical when illuminated at night. Chidorigafuchi is a five-minute walk from either Kudanshita or Hanzomon stationsDepending on the blooming dates, Chiyoda Sakura Festival starting dates change. It is expected to be around between March 25th to April 5th, but is best to keep an eye on its official webpage for precise dates. Best time to visit: late MarchAnnual turnout: approximately 1.28 million people 5. Shinjuku Gyoen (Tokyo) Shinjuku Gyoen (Tokyo) Sprawling across 58 hectares, Shinjuku Gyoen is a famous garden and green oasis in the heart of Shinjuku. It’s planted with around 1,000 cherry trees in numerous varieties, meaning you can see blossoms either early or late in the season. Aside from its traditional Japanese garden, Shinjuku Gyoen is also home to a former French garden and an English landscaped garden with lawns that are ideal for picnicking. Shinjuku Gyoen is just 10 minutes’ walk from Shinjuku Station’s South Exit or five minutes from Shinjuku-Sanchome Station. Best time to visit: around 20 March to early AprilAnnual turnout: approximately 1.2 million people 6. Inokashira Park (Tokyo) Inokashira Park (Tokyo) Situated in the Kichijoji area of western Tokyo, Inokashira Park is home to around 500 cherry trees, many of which are planted around its central pond. Some of the varieties are late blooming, with the fallen petals turning the waters a beautiful pink color. You can rent a boat and paddle across the pond or see the cherry blossoms illuminated at night. The park is a five-minute walk from Kichijoji Station. Best time to visit: late March to early AprilAnnual turnout: approximately 660,000 people 7. Mitsuike Park (Kanagawa) Mitsuike Park (Kanagawa) Centered around three ponds and a Korean Garden, Mitsuike Park sprawls across 30 hectares in Yokohama. Its home to 1,600 cherry trees of 78 different species that break out in blossoms during the spring, with the first trees to bloom being the kanzakura. The park is a 20-minute taxi ride from Yokohama Station. Note of caution, the cherry blossom trees are not lighted up so it is best to go during day time. Best time to visit: around 24 March to early AprilAnnual turnout: approximately 700,000 people 8. Maizuru Park (Fukuoka) Maizuru Park (Fukuoka) Situated in the heart of Fukuoka City, Maizuru Park is home to the ruins of Fukuoka Castle and around 1,000 cherry trees that bloom each spring. The occasion is marked by the Fukuoka Castle Sakura Festival when food stalls and shops set up in the park and the cherry trees are illuminated against the old castle walls at night. Maizuru Park is a five-minute walk from Akasaka or Ohori Park stationsBest time to visit: late March to early April 9. Okazaki Park (Aichi) Okazaki Park (Aichi) Home to the castle where Tokugawa Ieyasu was born, Okazaki Park features around 800 cherry blossom trees that line the Oto and Iga rivers. During the annual Sakura Festival, numerous food and drink vendors set up to create a bustling atmosphere. The cherry blossoms are illuminated by lanterns and, together with the white Okazaki Castle Tower, create a magnificent scene. The park is around 10 minutes’ walk from Higashi-Okazaki Station. The annual Sakura Festival is expected to be between March 27th to April 10th and may change depending on the blooming dates. This Shinto shrine is famous for its scarlet wooden structure and the hanging lanterns lining the corridors. Starting at 9 a.m., priests light the hanging lanterns inside Fujinami-no-ya Hall, creating a surreal atmosphere inside the dark space.You can find the Docomo bikes in the bike parking area of Kasuga Taisha. There are English instructions on the website to get you started, and you can even register beforehand. Grab one and let’s go! The hanging lanterns This is a fortune. 10:00 a.m. Todaiji Todaiji Todaiji is an impressive temple that’s home to the world’s largest wooden structure. Fittingly, the massive wooden compound houses one of the largest Buddha statues in the world, the Vairocana Buddha (often simply referred to as the temple’s Daibutsu). Walking around the imposing figure is a staggering experience, but don’t linger too long. You’ll need the time later in the day.You can have breakfast at the nearby Ten.Ten.Cafe, where the waffles and coffee come highly recommended. Try a seat on the patio if the weather’s nice. After a quick sit down, it’s time to hit the road. One of the largest Buddha statues in the world, the Vairocana Buddha. ・Riding Time: 8 minutes ・Distance: 1.2 km 11:30 a.m. Kohfukuji Five-story pagoda Kohfukuji is a temple you don’t necessarily have to enter, at least not right away. The view of its five-story pagoda from the opposite shore of the nearby Sarusawa Pond is breathtaking. The pagoda reflects off the surface of the water, flanked by trees and set against the sky, making it arguably the best picture of the temple. It’s definitely not to be missed. Inside the temple you’ll find plenty of Nara’s famous deer that will likely try to snuggle up to you for a snack, so be wary any food you have with you.The temple’s statue of Ashura, the Buddhist god of war, is designated as a National Treasure, and it’s open to the public during special visitation periods. Be sure to check the website before planning your cycling trip so you can glimpse this treasure for yourself. Our next destination is only a short ride away to keep the blood pumping. Nara’s famous deer ・Riding Time: 5 minutes ・Distance: 700 meters 12:30 p.m. Gangoji The oldest Buddhist temple in Japan, Gangoji. Japan's oldest temple Gangoji originated in Hokoji (Asukadera), and at one point took up the majority of Nara city. But over the course of its 1,300-year history, it’s been condensed to only the Gokuraku-do Hall and the Zen Room. On the verdant temple grounds there are countless Jizo bodhisattva statues and stone buddhas placed in neat rows, some peeking through moss fields and others keeping the company of flowers. While it is a smaller temple, it does not lack an atmosphere. You might find yourself wandering through its paths and forgetting about the time. There are countless Jizo. ・Riding Time: 3 minutes ・Distance: 500 metersThe Naramachi area is brimming with places to see, and you could spend hours upon hours investigating all the sights little by little. But there are still lots of World Heritage Sites to visit on our outing today. We recommended that you pick up lunch somewhere nearby and then get back on your bike to continue your tour of Nara. With the time you save today, you can return for a more thorough look through later. 2:30 p.m. Heijo Palace Suzaku Gate Heijo-kyo was built as the imperial seat and capital of Japan about 1,300 years ago in present-day Nara. With this city as its center of government and culture, the Ritsuryō Codes law system was put into place. For the next 74 years, from 710 to 784 CE, Nara was the official capital of Japan, and this period of history became known as the Nara period.Several of the Heijo Palace buildings have been restored on the former grounds, and the towering Suzaku Gate is also a World Heritage Site. Witness the reconstructed glory of the Nara Period. ・Riding Time: 17 minutes ・Distance: 3 km 3:00 p.m. Toshodaiji Toshodaiji Inside the temple grounds of Toshodaiji you can find the Kodo Lecture Hall, which was transplanted from Heijo Palace, along with the azekura wooden storehouses and other buildings that retain their original stylings from the Nara period. There are also several buddha statues from the Tempyo period, which are designated as National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties.The Kondo (Golden Hall) houses a Thousand-Armed Kannon statue that’s listed as a National Treasure. The ancient figure of the goddess of mercy is a must-see, and it’s just one example of the impressive historical relics Toshodaiji holds. ・Riding Time: 8 minutes ・Distance: 1.4 km Finish: 4:00 p.m. Yakushiji Yakushiji Yakushiji is the last stop on our speed tour of World Heritage Sites in Nara. Its stately East and West Pagodas are symbols of the temple’s symmetrical design, and while the East Pagoda will be under renovations until April 2020, the Main Hall and West Pagoda are still looking their best.Last entrance to the temple is at 4:30 p.m., and it closes at 5 p.m. So you’ll want to make the rounds pretty quickly.There aren’t that many Cycle Ports around this area, so it’s probably best to ride over to Nara Station or Naramachi to return your bike. Todaiji Temple: Omizutori (東大寺お水取り)

- Shunie is the name for a series of Buddhist repentance rituals that have been taking place at the Todaiji Temple in Nara prefecture for more than 1,250 years. The most famous and spectacular event is Omizutori, which begins just after sunset each night and sees giant torches being carried to the balcony of Nigatsudo Hall (a sub-complex of Todaiji Temple). Here their burning embers shower down and bestow onlookers with a safe year ahead. On the night of March 12, the torches are larger and more numerous, attracting the biggest crowds. Between 1:30 and 2:30 am, priests descend repeatedly to draw water from the well at the base of the temple hall in a ritual known as Omizutori (“water drawing”). It’s believed that the well’s water only flows once a year and has restorative properties. This is followed by the Dattan ceremony that’s performed inside Nigatsudo Hall and features the ringing of bells, blowing of horns and swinging of burning torches. When: March 1 - 14 2019

- A nation so proud of its long, illustrious history, Japan is home to more than its fair share of stunning historical sites. However, given just how much there is to explore, deciding where to visit can prove difficult. To help you out, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) have designated a number of sites to be of what they consider outstanding universal value when it comes to historical, cultural, and natural significance, here are some of the best. Nikko Nikko Sitting at the entrance to Nikko National Park, Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture is a town most famous for its natural beauty and World Heritage Status. The area is home to three world heritage sites in total; two shrines and one temple, all of which are connected by a stunning pathway flanked by tower cedar trees. Begin your exploration of Nikko’s World Heritage sites by visiting Futarasan Shrine. It was founded in 782 by Shodo Shonin, a monk who introduced Buddhism to Nikko. Next up, visit Rinnoji Temple, another site founded by Shodo Shonin. This temple is particularly beautiful in autumn when the verdant red leaves frame shrine and its garden. It has been undergoing renovations for the last 13 years which are scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2019. Finally the most striking of all the buildings is Toshogu Shrine. This complex is a mausoleum for Tokugawa Ieyasu, a member of the Tokugawa Clan who ruled Japan for over 250 years. Covered in meticulously crafted intricate designs it’s possible to lose multiple hours inspecting the detailed beauty of this incredible structure. Tucked deep in the ruggedly beautiful Gifu mountainscape, this small village of ‘gassho-zukuri’ houses - some of which are over 250 years old - looks like a historical painting come to life. The artfully thatched roofs of these houses look like the hands of Buddhist monks pressed together in prayer. In a previous life, these homes were used to house residents who would use the extra ceiling space to cultivate silkworms. It’s stunning all year round, but especially so during the colder months partly submerged under piles of pillowy white snow. Article:Gifu Prefecture Overview Nagasaki Nagasaki Tucked in the north-western corner of Kyushu island, Nagasaki is a pocket of Japan that boasts an incredibly fascinating history, and plenty of sites to match. Nagasaki was once home to many of the nation’s hidden Christians - known as Kakure Kirishitan - who had to remain in exile during most of the Edo Period (1603-1867) to avoid prosecution. Only in 2018 were many of these sites recognized by UNESCO, making now an excellent time to visit before it gets too popular a destination. A highlight is the Oura Cathedral located in Nagasaki, which was built towards the end of the Edo Period in 1864, making it the oldest surviving church in Japan. Article:Churches of the Goto Islands Okinawa Okinawa With a landscape as diverse and eclectic as its cultural influences, Okinawa is much more than just stunning beaches. It's also home to plenty of sites that are quite unlike anything else you’ll see in Japan. The most striking of all the landmarks has to be the Chinese-influenced Shuri Castle which is arguably the most iconic symbol of the Ryukyu Kingdom. This sprawling structure was used as the Imperial Palace and administrative center for the Ryukyu Kingdom which ruled the Ryukyu Islands of Japan between 1429 and 1879. Although it’s located in the center of Naha Okinawa’s main hub, it takes over an hour and a half to explore the site in depth, so put aside plenty of time to visit. Where to Go in Naramachi

- The small and historic city of Nara is a popular and must-see tourist destination in the Kansai region, and the city has many interesting spots and districts to visit. Covering a large area on the eastern side of the city is Nara Park, a great place to relax and take a stroll. Many of Nara’s most popular attractions are actually located within the limits of the park, but the park covers such a vast area that it is always easy to escape the crowds. The park’s most famous residents are the 1000 or so free-roaming deer, which in Shinto are believed to be messengers of the gods. The deer are fairly tame and vendors around the park sell crackers to feed them, with some deer even having learnt to bow before receiving one. Where to Go in Naramachi The park houses some of Nara’s most visited and famous spots, including Todai-ji, one of the largest wooden structures in the world housing a giant bronze Buddha; the renowned shrine of Kasuga Taisha located in the woods to the east of the park, famous for its lantern festivals; and Kofukuji, an interesting temple complex with one of the largest wooden pagodas in Japan. At the centre of the park you can also find the Nara National Museum which houses a fantastic collection of art of ancient artefacts. Where to Go in Naramachi Naramachi is the old merchant’s district, and its narrow streets are lined by traditional townhouses and warehouses from the Edo era. Many of the buildings have been preserved or faithfully recreated, and so exploring the area feels like stepping back in time. Don’t miss Koshi-no-Ie (Naramachi Lattice House) or Nigiwai-no-Ie, two fine examples of historic buildings with authentic period interiors, both of which are also free to enter. World Heritage locations in Nara

- Nara is a small city with a long history and is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Kansai region. Easy to reach from both Kyoto and Osaka, Nara is home to numerous World Heritage sites and is famous for its park full of tame deer. Naramachi is a small district in the centre of the city which was the merchant quarter during the Edo period. Many of the wooden machiya merchant buildings have been preserved as shops, cafes, and museums, and wandering along the district’s narrow streets (particularly at night) is a wonderfully atmospheric experience. Gangouji The “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara” are eight historic places in the city grouped together under the umbrella of one UNESCO World Heritage site. Located in the Naramachi district, Gangouji is one of the oldest temples in Nara, but sees relatively fewer visitors than some of the other famous ones in the city. The sprawling temple complex was constructed in the 8th century, but many of the original buildings have since disappeared. Machiya townhouses were built in their place in the 15th century, giving birth to the historic merchant district that still survives today. Gangouji Gangouji was one of Nara’s “seven great temples” and its remaining structures date back to when Buddhism first arrived in Japan. The Gokuraku-do and Zen-shitsu buildings have a simple beauty and are both registered as National Treasures. Visitors can find a treasure house and various stone lanterns and markers on the site. National Treasures of Nara

- Nara is a small city close to Kyoto and Osaka, but it is steeped in history and has plenty of things to see and do. In addition to numerous UNESCO World Heritage sites, the city is home to a large number of Designated National Treasures. These are cultural properties protected by law for their high historical or artistic value, and they include castles, shrines, temples, sculptures, and an array of other wonders. What makes Nara so special is that it is home to countless national treasures and, along with Kyoto, is home to perhaps a greater variety than in any other city in Japan. Todai-ji Todai-ji(東大寺) is one of Nara’s great temples and most famous attractions, and its main hall is one of the largest wooden structures in the world, inside of which sits a 15-meter-tall bronze-gilded Buddha, the biggest of its kind. The hall is part of a larger complex of buildings and structures, some of which are also designated national treasures. These include the Shosoin(正倉院), the temple treasure house built on stilts with a raised floor, and the Nandaimon(南大門), the impressive gate that guards the southern approach to the great hall. Todai-ji The Nigatsu-do(二月堂) is also part of Todai-ji and is located to the east of the main complex at the foot of Mt. Wakakusa. The main hall of Nigatsu-do is another designated national treasure and is most notable for its wonderful terrace with fantastic views of Todai-ji and the city beyond, particularly at sunset. It is also the site of the ‘Omizutori’ ceremony in early March, when priests carry flaming torches up to the balcony and hold them over the crowd below; the falling embers are supposed to signal good fortune. ด้วยชื่อเสียงที่แทบจะโดดเด่นเทียบเท่าเกียวโต นาราเป็นจังหวัดที่ห้ามพลาดสำหรับผู้ที่กำลังค้นหาสิ่งที่หลงเหลือของ “ญี่ปุ่นแบบดั้งเดิม” เมืองนาราที่ส่วนใหญ่เป็นป่าไม้นั้นถือครองสมบัติอันล้ำค่าของจังหวัดเอาไว้ ไม่ว่าจะเป็นวัดโทไดจิชื่อดังที่เป็นที่ประดิษฐานของพระพุทธรูปความสูง 15 เมตร และสวนนาราที่มีฝูงกวางที่พร้อมเป็นมิตรกับผู้คน ในขณะที่ภูเขานั้นแทบหาไม่ได้เลยในพื้นที่นี้ แต่ถ้าหากต้องการเดินป่าและชมวิวสวยๆ คุณสามารถมุ่งหน้าไปยังภูเขาคิอิในเขตโยชิโนะในช่วงฤดูใบไม้ผลิ ซึ่งจะมีดอกซากุระสีขาวและสีชมพูบานสะพรั่งตลอดริมเขา
