A Day in Sakaiminato
-
- Located in the western section of Tottori Prefecture, bordering Shimane Prefecture sits Sakaiminato, a port city with two major claims to fame: anime and crabs. The Matsuba crab commonly caught, served, and sold in this region is one of Tottori Prefecture’s culinary icons. Sakaiminato is also the hometown of Japanese manga artist and historian Shigeru Mizuki. Though Shigeru passed away in 2015, his legacy still lives on through his creations, which inhabit Sakaiminato’s streets. A Day in Sakaiminato As you wander through the city you’ll soon realize the impact of Shigeru’s work on the people of Sakaiminato. The city’s major road is named Mizuki Shigeru Road after the artist and it’s dotted with countless references to his work. Stretching 800 meters from JR Sakaiminato Station to Honmachi Arcade, the road is home to bronze statues of Shigeru’s characters as well as live characters in costume ready to welcome unsuspecting guests. A Day in Sakaiminato While wandering down the anime populated main street, pay special attention to your surroundings as the real art of the Sakaiminato city’s homage to the manga icon is in the tiniest of details. Shigeru’s trademark anime eye image is carefully hidden in countless corners of the city. Visit the GeGeGe no Kitaro manga figurine shop located in the center of Sakaiminato to pick up some unique collectors’ items and keep a look out for the Shigeru-styled eyes above the door front. - On the border of Tottori Prefecture lies Yonago which is home to an array of beautiful hot springs with views of the Sea of Japan and the magnificent Mt. Daisen-ji Mountain Temple

- Mount Daisen has long been a point of Japanese religious practices, starting even in prehistoric Jomon-era Japan with the ritualized worship of nature that eventually became Shintoism. By the 7th century, Daisen had become a center for Shugendo, a mix of ancient worship practices and Buddhism, before becoming a place primarily for the latter with the completion of Daisen-ji, a temple completed in the year 718 and still in use today. Daisen-ji Mountain Temple The walk up to Daisen-ji can be slightly intimidating, with many steps and slopes to deal with, but because of the terrain you quickly find yourself in quiet nature and without distractions and reaching the main hall is the perfect reward. Of course, winter can be a difficult time to visit due to weather, and the museum is closed from December through March, but outside of that timing the area is beautiful in every season. Just make sure you have good walking shoes, as with any temple area in Japan. Daisen-ji Mountain Temple At one point in history, there were over 3,000 monks living, studying, and worshipping at Daisen-ji (rivaling even Mount Koya), and there are still many artifacts from those days on display. Although the Dainichi-do main hall was destroyed by a fire in 1928 and took with it many priceless treasures, it was rebuilt in the 1950's and is home to a statue of the Jizo Bosatsu, known as Ksitigarbha in East Asian Buddhism. Sambutsu Temple at Mt. Mitoku

- Mount Mitoku, like other sacred mountains in Tottori, has been a place for the practice and training of mountain ascetics for over 1,300 years. It has been home to many temples and places of worship built on its rocky slopes, but none more famous and impressive than Sanbutsu Temple and its Nageiri Hall. Sambutsu Temple at Mt. Mitoku Visiting this temple complex isn’t for everyone, and seeing it all will require a fair bit of climbing and coordination. You’ll definitely need good shoes for climbing, though if you aren’t equipped you can purchase traditional straw sandals that the monks wear and try it the old-fashioned way. In many cases, they won’t even let you in without the right footwear, including many types of sneakers. You’ll need to enter through the official climber’s office and go with at least one other person, though if you’re on your own you can likely find a companion at some point. Guided tours are available, but require a reservation in advance. Sambutsu Temple at Mt. Mitoku Once you’ve made it up the mountain, you’ll arrive in a complex of multiple halls, built in various times over many centuries, offering incredible views down the slopes and across valleys. Where to Go in Tottori Prefecture

- The capital of any region always has a lot to live up to. Tottori City doesn’t disappoint. With Japan’s largest sand dunes fashioned from volcanic ash near the Sendai River, and delicious Matsuba crab awaiting hungry, vibrating taste buds in Tottori Harbor, Tottori City has something to say. If you love the outdoors, you can’t get more outside than sand dunes. Great for climbing and sand sports, the Tottori Sand Dunes are open 24 hours. Although, they greet early birds with unique patterns drawn by the wind before people brandish the sediment with their toes. You can also enjoy the beauty of endless sand and sloping dunes without getting sand in your shoes with a cable car ride from the Sakyu Center. Okudaisen region Okudaisen region The mystery of Mt. Daisen awaits you in the region of Okudaisen. Inspiring the ancient rituals of what is said to be the roots of Japanese people, Shinto, and various artists and philosophers alike. In the ancient text used in Shinto, Kojiki, Mt. Daisen is referred to as god. This is a power spot if ever there was one.When the adventure in you calls you back inside, head to the Shoji Ueda Photography Museum. Serving as the filming location for a popular Korean TV drama, this museum is fashioned in the style of Shoji Ueda’s surrealist photography style. His internationally-acclaimed perspective can be summed up in the massive camera obscura room that enables one to feel as if you were inside a camera. Misasa Onsen Misasa Onsen To heal the body, sometimes nature is needed. This is the main reason visitors seeking natural remedies flock to Misasa Onsen. As you are able to drink the mineral-rich water and inhale the steam, you will leave the onsen not only intensely relaxed but also naturally fortified. With almost a thousand years of history, there is an ancient tale that colors the onsen’s background called the “White Wolf legend”. It tells of a warrior that decided in the spur of the moment to spare the life of a white wolf. As a result, a Bodhisattva appeared in the warrior’s dream and told him the location of a life-saving onsen. The warrior then passed on the information and from then on villagers visited the waters to heal their diseases. Sakaiminato City Sakaiminato City As with Tottori City, Sakaiminato City is known for their Matsuba crabs. One recommended place to get a delicious crab donburi is Genkitei restaurant, but we don’t discriminate, as Tottori crabs are tender and juicy anywhere in the prefecture. Just know that you will do yourself a disservice if you don’t try at least one crab-based meal while in Tottori Prefecture. If you like manga, you must know that this is where Mizuki Shigeru, the creator of Ge Ge Ge no Kitaro, was raised. As a noted master of the medium, you can feel the atmosphere that inspired the legend in the city. Aoya Town Aoya Town To treat your hands to a traditional Japanese cultural activity, why not try to make some washi paper in Aoya Town? You can create paper and a lampshade at the Aoya Paper Factory from 1200 yen. Sometimes travel memories need to be cemented in the physical. What’s more symbolic than a sheet of paper to inscribe your most precious memories from your Tottori adventure? Mitsukue region Mitsukue region When the itch to go local and experience the area as the locals do and did, we recommend heading out into the countryside of Mitsukue for a taste of “Deep Tottori”. Where to Go in Tottori City

- Tottori City is the capital of Tottori Prefecture and located in the Chugoku region of Japan. While the prefecture may be most famed for its sand dunes, you can rest assured there is plenty else to be excited by in Tottori City, from the ruins of a 16th century castle to a bustling seafood market. Tottori Prefectural Museum Tottori Prefectural Museum The Tottori Prefectural Museum is home to a permanent exhibition which puts a spotlight on the local artists of Tottori Prefecture, as well as the rich natural history and folk history of this region. From the usual art and photography, to the unexpected fossils and traditional crafts on display, there is plenty to absorb in the museum’s permanent exhibition and carving out some time to spend here is highly recommended. The museum also keeps a busy schedule of temporary exhibitions which you can check on the official website. Karoichi Seafood Market and Karo Harbor Karoichi Seafood Market and Karo Harbor While making your way to and from the Karoichi seafood market, take some time to wander along the harbor and spot the local fishing boats bringing in the day’s catch. Tottori produces seasonal specialities year round - shrimp in the spring; oysters and white squid in the summer; horse mackerel and white sailfin in the fall; and snow crab in the winter. The bustling Karoichi seafood market is an absolute must-visit for all those seeking to sample the finest local seafood. Here, locals and tourists can buy fresh produce or eat at one of the various restaurants serving up expertly prepared seafood dishes. Karoichi Seafood Market and Karo Harbor Tottori Castle Ruins Tottori Castle Ruins Originally built in 1532, Tottori Castle is survived today only by the ruins of the castle’s stone walls set into Mount Kyusho. Climbing up to the observation point will afford you an impressive view over the Jinpukaku Residence and wider Tottori City that’s begging to be uploaded to your Instagram. If you find yourself in Tottori City during cherry blossom season, the ruins are one of the best places to view the blossoms in this region as there are hundreds planted throughout the stone ruins. Jinpukaku Residence Jinpukaku Residence Jinpukaku was built in the early 1900’s by the Ikeda clan - the feudal lords of this region from the Edo era. Built in a Western style, it was the first building in Tottori to have electric lights and it was a grand departure from the traditional Japanese architecture which dominated the area up to that time. The residence is now preserved as a museum which costs 150 yen to enter (free for high school students and younger). Once inside, you can learn about the history of the Ikeda clan and view the elaborate spiral staircase, leading to a view of the surrounding garden. Getting Around Tottori

- You want to go to Tottori we hear. Well, you’ll need some transportation to get there, Here’s a short guide on the ideal ride for your journey. Let’s begin. Flights Flights To get to Tottori Prefecture by plane, you have two options. There is the Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport in Tottori City for domestic flights (mostly from Haneda Airport), and the Yonago Kitaro Airport in Yonago City for international flights. Luckily, if you’re leaving from Haneda Airport in Tokyo, you won’t lose any time choosing one or the other. Rather, it’s better to choose where to fly in based on what your itinerary looks like. That way you can maximize your precious travel time once you touch down. The Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport was renovated in 2015 to honor the Tottori-born creator, Gosho Aoyama, the creator of “Detective Conan”, otherwise known as “Case Closed”. This popular manga and anime that has won hearts all over the world greets airport visitors in a variety of forms. From the moment you step off the plane, posters of the anime characters smile back at you from the corridor. Throughout the entire process of collecting your baggage and exiting the airport, this home-grown artist’s legacy guides you to the beginning of your journey in Tottori. This is a great touch to whet the appetite of visitors hungry for adventure in Tottori. Buses Buses From your airport, you can take a bus to the main stations or directly to the major tourist sites. In the case of Tottori Sand Dunes Conan Airport, you can take a Conan-themed bus and start your journey off right! Once you leave the airport and enter Tottori City though, you’ll have to leave the great detective behind and board the loop bus to hit all the main sightseeing spots. Decorated with the mythical creature from the tradition of the Inaba region, Kirinjishi (similar to what you’d find on a Kirin beer bottle), you will travel with the ancients. Operational essentially all throughout the year, for 300 yen, adults can board and for children, it’s 150 yen a ride. Although, the one day pass that allows unlimited riding until the last bus for 600 yen is quite a steal. You can get tickets on the bus itself or at the Tottori Bus Terminal. With two routes to choose from, you can head towards Tottori Port with the A route, and towards Tottori Sand Dunes with the B route. Both buses end and begin at the Tottori Bus Terminal. Trains Trains As with anywhere in Japan, the train system is reliable and fast. Arriving one minute early or late in the major cities is newsworthy, and for the lesser-known areas, you can expect an intercom apology for the “trouble”. Trains in Tottori Prefecture are no different. Trains The main stations include JR Tottori, JR Yonago, JR Kurayoshi, and JR Sakaiminato. With all the amenities typical of Japanese train stations, you can take a short breather with the numerous convenience stores, bathrooms, cafes and catch up with your friends and family with the available wifi after securing your belongings in the lockers. Taxis Taxis If you prefer a more personalized trip into the city from the airport, taxis are always available. With a number of companies to choose from, simply go to the information desk inside your airport to arrange a ride. With minimum fares starting from 550 yen for smaller cars and 560 yen for medium-sized cars, you’ll be inside the main city for your respective airport within half an hour. Rental Cars Rental Cars For the ultimate choose-your-own-adventure style journey through Tottori Prefecture, you can’t go wrong with a rental car. Although there are numerous companies you can choose from in the airport, the JR Rent-A-Car has a discount for those that purchase at the train station. - In the west of Japan’s main island Honshu looking onto the Sea of Japan lies Tottori Prefecture which is celebrated as the home of the country’s largest sand dunes as well as many notable national parks. Along the border, the highest of the Chugoku mountain range, the volcanic Mount Daisen gives the area its picturesque backdrop.Seasonal changes are thoroughly celebrated in Japan and Tottori Prefecture is well-known for being a great destination to visit all year round. View cherry blossoms in Kyusho Park in Tottori City and Minatoyama Park near Yonago; During summer, laze around the beaches and enjoy beer festivals, fireworks, and fire processions; Take in the richly coloured autumn leaves in the popular spots of Masumizu Kogen and Kagikake Pass; and winter brings snow sports, sparkling illuminations, and seafood feasts.Seafood season starts around November and is kicked off by a crab festival in Tottori City’s Marinepia Karo where free portions of crab soup are served up. The event also marks the start of fishing for Tottori’s juiciest speciality, snow crab. As well as its famous snow crab, Tottori Prefecture’s specialities include gyukotsu ramen, a rich flavored beef bone broth, a specially processed tofu, and Kakinohazushi, a type of trout sushi marinated in vinegar and seasoned with a little sansho pepper. Tottori Prefecture is also famous for its large, juicy nashi pears which are regularly shipped out to all the major cities across Japan. For some of the best views in the area, visit the castle ruins in Yonago which look over Lake Nakaumi, the fifth largest lake in Japan, and Mount Daisen. The Tottori Castle Ruins also offer commanding views overlooking the impressive Jinpukaku, a Western-style French renaissance style house built in the early 1900s as a residence for the 14th lord of the Ikeda clan.The natural beauty of the Tottori Sand Dunes are ever-changing with the winds coming in from the Sea of Japan. 雨の日に午後4時頃に参拝する。森の中の石段を登っていく。登りきったところに本殿がある。古さを感じず、手入れが行き届いている感じ。 社務所が閉まる時間のようであったが、御朱印も丁寧にご対応いただいた。 トイレは、石段の途中ではなく、社務所横の坂を下りたところにあるのを使いたい。
