This shop specializes in karashi renkon mustard filled lotus root, one of Kumamoto's most well-known local dishes. It is said the shop's origins date back some 400 years ago to 1632 when the shop's founder, Heigoro, presented his karashi daikon to Hosokawa Tadatoshi, then-lord of the domain. Originally a health food for lords, the shop's karashi renkon is made without any preservatives whatsoever. The shop continues to make its karashi renkon diligently by hand, one at a time, the same way as when the shop was established. You can cut off a slice and eat it as-is or garnish it with soy sauce, mayonnaise, sesame dressing, or other condiments to curb the spiciness. Conversely, if you want your karashi renkon to be more spicy, try heating it in a microwave for about 20 seconds.

Karashi renkon is a famous local dish which has been made in Kumamoto for some 400 years, and this shop makes its karashi renkon with love and care one at a time. The shop uses a type of lotus root grown in Kumamoto which has a distinctively pleasant texture. The karashi miso filling is made using a special barely miso recipe passed down for generations; while the outer batter is made with a mixture of flour, ground fava beans, and ground turmeric. The shop also offers a karashi renkon-making activity in which you can hand-stuff and deep-fry your very own karashi renkon to take home.

    こじんまりとしたお店で開いているのか閉まっているのかがよく分からない暗い雰囲気ですが、味は美味しいと思います。特に棒状の辛子レンコンはお手軽サイズ、お手軽価格でお気に入りです。
