"This sweet shop is located in front of the five-storied pagoda of Rurikoji Temple, the tenth oldest pagoda in the country. The shop is marked by its retro exterior and sells items such as soft-serve ice cream, shaved ice, coffee and matcha green tea. A popular product is the shop's handmade ""soba soft-serve ice cream."" Soft-serve ice cream kneaded with Choshu buckwheat flour is sprinkled with buckwheat seeds, and is known for its refreshing aroma and light texture. The black rice soft-serve ice cream, which has a rich yet refreshing aftertaste, and the frozen yogurt made with summer mandarin oranges, a specialty of Yamaguchi, are also popular."

Their summer tangerine Soft-Serve Ice Cream is the only one made with real Hagi-grown summer tangerine juice. • Hofu Tenmangu Shrine Hoshoan Teahouse
    Travel / Tourism
    Yamaguchi Hofu-shi Matsuzakicho 14-1
Hoshoan (meaning a fragrant pine retreat) was built in 1991 on the grounds of a former monks' quarter. Sugiwara no Michizane (845-903) revived the practice of enjoying tea in the 9th century imperial court. (Tea at the time tasting more medicinal that what is currently enjoyed.) This tea house was built in honor of that tradition. The Hoshoan is actually a small traditional tea house located on the eastern side of the garden but sitting opposite the tea house is a large two-story building. Both buildings overlook a beautiful garden featuring a stream which is home to a number of carp. The admission fee to the tea house includes matcha green tea and seasonal traditional Japanese sweets. The proper method for enjoying your tea is to take the bowl with your right hand, place it on your right palm, and then to turn the bowl twice clockwise. In doing this you can avoid drinking the tea from the front of the bowl.

Heading west along Japan’s largest island, Honshu, the very last prefecture you’ll reach is Yamaguchi, separated from Kyushu by a small strip of water known as the Kanmon Straits, which the far-reaching harbor city Shimonoseki looks over. With water at every turn, the seafood of Yamaguchi is an indisputable highlight, and we’re not talking just the usual fish dishes - the notorious fugu, or puffer fish, is a Japanese delicacy that was discovered in Yamaguchi prefecture, making it the best place to try it out.
