Ankokuji temples are Buddhist temples which were built in each province by Ashikaga Tadayoshi, brother to the shogun Ashikaga Takauji, to memorialize those who died in the years of war and fighting which occurred during the Northern and Southern Courts period. Records state this particular Ankokuji was founded by the priest Gukoku Osho in 1339 and was named the Kinpoji at that time. The temple experienced a decline but later received a significant donation from the samurai lord Mori Terumoto in 1599 and was restored to its former glory by Mori clan diplomat and Buddhist monk Ankokuji Ekei. The temple possesses numerous cultural properties, such as its Shakado hall; a rock garden; and a statue depicting the Amitabha triad, the temple’s principal object of worship. In spring, the cherry trees in front of the Shakado are lit up at night while in bloom, and the temple is a famous cherry blossom-viewing destination in the Tomonoura area.

Located on a hill, visitors to the grounds can enjoy a sweeping view of Kure Bay. The shrine's grand Yabu festival is famous for its abundance of participants, leading to its nickname as the ""people festival."" During the festival, shrine parishioners carry a portable shrine with a straw barrel filled with new rice; meanwhile, messengers of the goods called ""Yabu"" poke and prod the barrel with bamboo poles, attempting to delay the parishioners. The contest between the parishioners and Yabu can last hours."

Said to have been founded in the middle of the Heian period, Taisanji Temple is also called “Tenjinbo.” The temple has a Higiri Jizo statue, and many students come to pray for success when they have exams. To the left of the precincts there’s stone monkey images known as the “Goen monkeys.” Their funny gestures are the opposite of Nikko’s three monkeys who “See no evil, speak no evil, and hear no evil.” This invites good luck.

This Buddhist temple was founded in 1633 as the family temple of the Asano clan by Asano Nagaharu, the third lord of the clan. The temple’s grounds adjoin Ozekiyama Park and are dotted with cultural properties tied to the famed 47 ronin. An impressive weeping cherry on the grounds is said to have been planted by Oishi Kuranosuke, chamberlain of Ako Domain, when he visited the area on the occasion of Asano Nagaharu’s daughter Agurihime marriage to Asano Takuminokami, the man whose forced suicide instigated the events of the 47 ronin. The majestic tree stands 30-meters-tall and the temple’s grounds are one of the city’s leading cherry blossom-viewing destinations; the weeping cherry on the grounds of the Dairakuji Temple is also said to have been planted from one of this tree’s buds. Some of the temple’s many other highlights include the Gishido temple, which enshrines wooden statues of the 47 ronin; and a stone spire under which is buried the hair of Agurihime.
