A five-minute drive from the Hamada Interchange on the Hamada Expressway and a 20-minute walk from JR Hamada Station. The ruins of Hamada Castle stand on a small, 70-meter-high hill. During the approximate 250 year span from when it was constructed in the early Edo period until it fell during a battle with the forces of Choshu Domain, the castle served as the main stronghold for the Hamada Domain government. Today, the stone base and walls of the castle still remain, and a park has been built around them. This park is also a popular cherry blossom viewing destination in spring. The site has been designated a Cultural Property by Shimane Prefecture and was also selected as Continued series of Japan's Top 100 Castles in 2017.

This museum stands on the border between Hamada City and Gotsu City. The white-walled building holds a collection of ancient art like swords and pottery centered on pieces from the Iwami region. A single-story steel reinforced concrete building standing amidst white sand and green pines, it was registered as the prefecture's third museum in 1979 in accordance with the Museum Act. To this day, it stands as a hall of arts in Iwami in both name and fact. It offers clear introductions to the cultural history of the Iwami region, including ancient art, folk crafts, and more. Their collection of Iwami Nagahama dolls has a reputation for its number and is particularly impressive.

"A pottery studio that has operated in western Shimane's Iwami area since the 1970s. They make Iwami-yaki pottery, a traditional Gotsu handicraft known for large and sturdy earthenware jars and water jugs. This area is called ""Sekishu,"" and pottery making has thrived in the region since ancient times. According to the Iwami region's pottery lore, the district where Miyauchi Pottery is located is said to be the oldest in the tradition. They also hold pottery workshops where you can make items like teacups and bowls under the careful guidance of a traditional craftsman. The methods traditionally cultivated for making larger items has been passed down to the present day where they make practical pottery for modern living like tableware, umbrella stands, and garden sets."
  • Ogawa-ke Sesshu Garden
    Travel / Tourism
    Shimane Gotsu Wakicho 165
A garden at the former Ogawa family residence in Waki -cho, Gotsu City. It is said that the original garden was created in the middle of the Muromachi period, but was redesigned by the master painter Sesshu, who stayed with the Ogawa family. The roughly 363 square meter garden can be viewed from the study. Combining many standing stone slabs of various sizes with a triad of stones at the center, the two-tiered viewing garden with a pond is incorporated into the hillside. At first glance, the layout of the stones looks random, but it's meant to represent the mythical landscape of Horai Sansui. It looks like the garden's been taken from an ink painting; one of the most famous in the San'in region, it's been designated a Shimane Prefecture Cultural Property.

  • Iwami Kokubunji Temple Ruins
    Travel / Tourism
    Shimane Hamada Kokubucho 1527
This is one of the provincial monasteries and provincial nunneries built all over Japan by decree of the Emperor Shomu in the Nara period. Part of the remains was excavated as part of a past survey, and now experts believe that a roughly eight meters square tower built over the podium, about 12 meters from the nature-shrouded brick area. It is now part of the grounds of Jodoshinshu Konzoji temple, and only part of the tower and foundation stones remain, so the original figure is unclear. The excavated roof tiles and pots demonstrate that this area was once the center of the Iwami state, as the location of the domain's government.

Shimane Areas

around-area-map

What Shimane prefecture lacks in size and population, it makes up for in scenery and ancient mythology. Izumo-taisha, in the middle of the prefecture, is said to be Japan’s oldest Shinto shrine, where stories that delve into the creation of the Japanese race have been passed down over centuries. The 180 Oki Islands, a 40-minute ferry ride north of Sakaiminato, offer an undiscovered paradise well off the beaten track.
