Located inside a traditional Naramachi townhouse, this hands-on museum allows guests to touch and play with toys from yesteryear. The museum's permanent exhibits feature reproductions of mechanical toys from the Edo and later periods which guests can play with. It also hosts events including seminars where participants can try their hand at making toys.

The mechanical toy museum is a must! Its free, which feels weird after having enjoyed our visit so much. The lady who was showing us around was very pleasant and spoke good english. Personally we...

This Buddhist temple is said to have been founded by Ariwara no Narihira to enshrine a Buddhist statue he carved himself. The temple’s principal object of worship, a wooden figure of Kannon designated an Important Cultural Property, is also known as the Narihira Kannon. The elegant appearance of the temple is reminiscent of a Heian period noble’s estate, and the grounds are planted with beautifully blooming seasonal flowers such as weeping forsythia, water lilies, and Narihira camellias.

Nara's oldest Ebisu (God of commerce) Shrine is also in the precinct and many people visit the shrine to pray for success in business.

This shrine was built by the imperial order of Empress Suiko in 593 and enshrines Omononushi no Mikoto as the deity. The current main shrine built in the Momoyama period is designated as Prefectural Cultural Property. There is also a forest shrine enshrining Rinjyouin no Mikoto, the first person to bring manju, buns filled with sweet red bean jam, to Japan. As the only manju shrine in Japan, every year on the 19th of April, Manju Festival is held.

Other products include the Shiroi Shika no Purin pudding, and the Daibutsu-sama no Hohoemi Cookie.

"This Buddhist temple is located in Narukawa-cho, Nara City. The temple is situated in the ""Nara-machi"" area centering on the former grounds of the Gango-ji Temple. The temple grounds are believed to have been the site of the estate of Nara period aristocrat Fujiwara no Toyonari. Records state that a small Hokyoin pagoda which still stands on the grounds is dedicated to Chujo-hime, Toyonari's daughter who, according to legend, wove the Taima Mandala of the Taimadera Temple in Taima, Katsuragi City in a single evening."

A shaved ice and tea specialty shop located a seven minute walk from Kintetsu-Nara Station. This popular shop is visited by a great many people even in winter. The shop uses pure Nara ice slowly frozen over a period of three days for its shaved ice treats. The milk, honey, matcha green tea powder, and other ingredients used by the shop are also primarily from Nara. The shop’s signature espuma shaved ice is made with thinly shaved ice topped with mousse-like espuma syrup. The shop is located in Tsunofuri Town, Nara City, Nara Prefecture. Nara Uchiwa are made by combining 20 sheets of Japanese washi paper and are characterized by the use of “sukashibori,” a technique in which a design is cut into the fan paper using tiny knives. In addition to selling Nara Uchiwa and Nara Sensu folding fans, the shop also holds reservation only classes in which participants can try making their own Nara Uchiwa.

Nara Areas

around-area-map

With a reputation almost as stellar as that of Kyoto, Nara is a must-visit for those searching for the remains of "traditional Japan." The largely green Nara city holds the majority of the prefecture's treasures, such as the iconic Todai-ji Temple, in which a 15-meter tall Great Buddha sits, and Nara Park, where deer flock to befriend passersby. While mountains are by no means hard to come by in this area, for hiking with a reward, head to the Kii Mountains' Yoshino district in spring, when the hillsides put on an impressive display of white and pink cherry blossoms.
