Kishiwada Castle is located in Kishiki-cho, in Kishiwada City. Kishiwada Castle, also known as Chikiri Castle, is said to have been built by Wada Takaie, a relative of Kusunoki Masashige. The castle tower was built in 1585, when Toyotomi Hideyoshi's grandfather, Koide Hidemasa, began to expand the castle. The current three-tier / three-story castle tower was built in 1954, after the previous five-story burned down when it was struck by lightning in 1827. During the time of the Meiji Restoration, with the tower and gate destroyed, only the moat and stone walls still stood. In 1943, the site was designated as a historical site by Osaka Prefecture, and in 2014, Kishiwada Castle Garden (Hachijin no Niwa) was designated as a Place of Scenic Beauty. It is also a famous flower-viewing spot.

After visiting many castles in Japan, it was a pleasure to visit one with an intimate feel. There are some exhibits on a couple of floors, but not enough to make it feel more like a museum than a...

This museum is located in Daisen Park, just 500 meters from the JR Hanwa Line's Mozu Station. The museum was opened in 1980, as a memorial project for the city's 90th anniversary. Many items pertaining to Sakai City's history, art and customs are preserved displayed in the museum's permanent exhibition, including reproductions of a map of Emperor Nintoku's stone mausoleum and a terracotta unearthed from Emperor Nintoku's tomb in the Kofun / Nintoku Tomb exhibition, and a model of the city of Sakai and a Sakai (matchlock) gun in the Free City Sakai exhibition.

Really enjoyed this museum. The excellent exhibits and friendly stall. But the best was the video, with English subtitles - a great overview of the area. Well worth seeking this out & spending an...

    Osaka Sakaishi Sakai-ku Kitamikunigaokachou 2-2-1
Locals call the deity of this shrine Mr. Hochigai. It has been here for many years, and has long guided them on matters of orientation, the land and Feng Shui, so they don't build in inauspicious ways. The shrine is located in Sakai City, on the north side of Emperor Hansei's tomb, and was once a way-point on the Kumano pilgrimage. Many Kumano pilgrims would pray here for a safe journey. An annual festival is held at the shrine every year on May 31st. Worshippers who have offered up an earthen-wrapped chimaki (steamed rice dumpling) to this deity receive a chimaki sweet on the day of the festival.

In Ancient and Medieval Japan, they used to believe that leaving for the right direction is very important especially when you make a long journey or move to another house. Hochigai literally...

Located five minutes from Fujii-dera Interchange, in Fujii-dera 1 Chome, this temple, belonging to the Omuro school of the Shingon sect of Buddhism, is the fifth temple of the Saigoku 33 Kannon Pilgrimage. The temple was established by Gyoki in accordance with Emperor Shomu's imperial prayer, in the year 725. The main hall, where the national treasure, the thousand-armed Kannon is enshrined, also incorporates struts called kaerumata and lavish carvings in its construction. The wood carvings adorning the traditional gable roof are intimidating, and the four-pillared temple gate (the West Gate) is also an Important Cultural Property. It was built by order of Toyotomi Hideyori, in the Momoyama Period. Fujii-dera Temple has also been famous for over a thousand years for the Wisteria flowers that continue to bloom here, and during full bloom, their purple blossoms flutter in the wind.

This museum is dedicated to land development history, with the dyke and unearthed cultural assets from Japan's oldest dammed reservoir, the historic Sayamaike. The dam was designed by architect Tadao Ando. The first thing to draw visitors' eyes is the permanent exhibition of a cross section of the dyke, which was created using the Shikiha koho method of construction, in the Asuka period. A 15-meter high and 60-meter wide section of the dyke was reconstructed for the exhibition, so the stratum of 1,400 years since the dyke's construction can be clearly seen. A place of lifelong learning, there are also many special exhibits and items of interest in the museum.

This temple is located in Mizuma, Kaizuka City. While it is commonly called Mizuma Kannon, its official name is Mizuma-dera Temple. According to legend, the temple was built by Gyoki, on Emperor Shomu's orders. The temple's name comes from the meeting of the Kogi River, flowing down from Mt. Katsuragi, and the Kibitani tributary River. The current main hall was rebuilt in 1811, with the temple having been razed multiple times by the fires of war. The principle object of worship in the temple is a Kannon that drives away misfortune. The Shogatsu Hoe and Senbon Mochitsuki festivals, which are held every New Year, are designated Intangible Cultural Properties of Kaizuka City.

In the building you'll find various sized halls, a multipurpose hall, a cultural exchange hall, conference rooms, and studios. This museum is approximately a 13-minute walk from the Nankai Line's Kishiwada Station. You can learn all about the Kishiwada Danjiri festival at this facility. Actual items used in the Danjiri festival are exhibited in the event hall on the second floor, and every hour, there is a screening of the Danjiri festival on the 27-screen display. Also exhibited here, are things such as the Old Kamiyacho, which was made in 1842 and retired in 1990. In the experience corner on the fourth floor, you can experience what you feel like to ride on the top of Danjiri big roof, which is just like the stage star and often a carpenter does the role, and the exciting Danjiri-bayashi, with the great Taiko drums and small Taiko drums.
