    Mie Pref. Igashi Marubashira 569
Iga Ware Pottery Nagatanien is a well-established pottery which has carried on the culture and techniques of Iga Ware since opening in 1832. A climbing kiln with 16 continuous chambers operated until 1970s has been designated as a National Tangible Cultural Property. Taishokan built in the Taisho period (1912-1926) was actually used as an office until the 2000s. It preserves a phone and a safe from those days, and today opens as a place to rest where you can enjoy Taisho Roman (romantic vintage style).

  • Iga Doraku
    Travel / Tourism
    Mie Iga-shi Marubashira 1043
This pottery studio makes Doraku Iga ware, a variety of pottery in production since the Edo period. Amidst the area's seasonal natural beauty and vast, open skies, the studio continues to create pottery which is redolent with the earthy smell of clay and which is praised for its elegant appearance. The Marubashira district in Iga City where the studio is located has been famous for its production of pottery since the Nara period. The studio's pottery is made only with clay from Iga, which is notable for its ability to tolerate high temperatures, and customers rave that its donabe pots cook foods quickly and do not break easily. The studio is adjoined by a gallery which displays and sells the studio's pottery, and here visitors can pick up and examine pieces which are each subtly different in appearance and purchase their favorites.

    Mie Ise-shi Asamacho 801-15
"This pottery studio stands at the foot of Mt. Asama, about which in ancient times it was said that ""a pilgrimage to Ise without visiting Asama is only half a pilgrimage."" Surrounded by abundant natural beauty, the studio makes chawan bowls, yunomi teacups, flower vases, mugs, and other pottery items which easily integrate into everyday life. The studio also conducts pottery making activities every Saturday and Sunday in which participants can receive courteous instruction while creating their very own, one-of-a-kind pottery piece. You can borrow all the tools and equipment you need and the studio will send pieces C.O.D. after they have been fired."

Spread across the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula, Mie prefecture boasts hundreds of kilometers of pretty coastline comprising the oyster-rich Toba city and Shima National Park all the way down to Kumano, a city that marks the beginning of part of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, which runs into neighboring Wakayama prefecture. However, Mie is best known for the Ise Jingu Shinto shrine inland, one of the oldest and largest shrines in the country.
