  • Myoken-jinja Shrine Cherry Blossoms

    Gifu Gujo-shi Yamatocho Maki
    This Shinto shrine is said to have been founded in the early 13th century. Its beginnings are said to be associated with Tou Taneyuki of the Tou clan who participated meritoriously in the Jokyu War and received this territory, transferring the spirit of Myoken Bosatsu, the patron deity of the Chiba clan. Gifu Prefecture has designated the shrine's Nanoka Festival held every year on August 7th as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. About 100 cherry trees of various sizes are planted along the roughly 250-meter approach to the shrine. The tunnel of cherry blossoms that forms when the trees are in full bloom from early to mid-April has been selected as one of the Top 33 Spots to View Cherry Blossom in the Hida-Mino region.

    A shop specializing in woodwork at Roadside Station Seiryu no Sato Shirotori. Since ancient times, Shiratori Town has been known for producing high-quality cedar and hinoki cypress. The shop is run by the Gujo Forestry Cooperative that manages the local forests with the environment in mind. Their many inviting wooden items include a table made of a single slab of 200-plus year old horse chestnut, and a round display shelf ideal for modern interiors. It's fun just looking at the items they have on display. Their laser-carved name plates are also popular.

    A soba restaurant at Roadside Station Seiryu no Sato Shirotori located a five-minute drive from Mino Shiratori Station. They offer freshly made soba noodles from locally produced buckwheat flour. The pleasing aroma of the noodles goes great with the broth made with pure local water. They also offer a variety of side dishes like hoba-sushi, a Gifu seasonal tradition with vinegared rice wrapped in a magnolia leaf. Other items include mountain vegetable tempura and sobagaki buckwheat dumplings. They also hold soba making workshops (reservations required).

    おそばを頂きました。 梅肉おろしそば、梅肉は肉団子ぐらいたっぷりあって、暑い夏場に最適。塩分が補充されました。 まだまだ暑い日が続きますが、塩分補給は重要です。 ところでこのお店、テーブルはすべて一枚板なんです。林業が盛んなんですね。

They serve typical Gujo Hachiman fare like Hida beef Japanese barbecue in a classic atmosphere with antique clocks, chests of drawers, and more. The Gujo Misoni Set Meal is a healthy dish that warms your body from the core with vegetables simmered in rich Gujo miso on rice. This Gujo home fare contains vegetables like onions and eggplant, as well as tofu and konjac. They also feature wild sweetfish salt-grilled, sashimi style, fried, and in rice soup.

    A confectionery shop central Gujo Hachiman, opposite the Former Gujo Hachiman Government Building Memorial Hall, a popular sightseeing spot. Founded while the government office was still in use, the current owner brings a background in Western sweets to their products. They sell a variety of original sweets made with Gujo ingredients, including cinnamon flavored soft rice cakes and baked manju buns with crusts made with condensed cream. Their summertime Seiryu-no-Shizuku gelatin treats are like drops of a fresh, clear spring. They even look refreshing and make great gifts.

    The only store dealing in Gujo pongee fabric, a luxurious handwoven silk cloth is made with plant dyes to produce a luster and simple colors. It is woven with top-grade, carefully selected domestic spring cocoons. The more you wear it, the more lustrous it gets, and it can even be worn for three generations. Munehiro Rikizo, who was born in Hachiman-cho, revived the tradition of pongee woven by Gujo farmers for personal use. He employed an innovative technique to create today's Gujo pongee. He's been nationally certified an Important Intangible Cultural Property Technology Holder, a first for an individual dealing with pongee. The store's first floor sells kimono accessories and indigo dyed merchandise, and the second floor displays works by Munehiro Rikizo.

    A three-minute walk from Miyagase Bridge, this is the oldest liquor store on Gujo Hachiman's waterfront area. The shop's Hida-style architecture gives a feel of its history. They offer a host of local sakes, rare hizoshu varieties, and more. Their daiginjo drip fresh sake is bottled from the droplets falling from a hanging bag is renowned nationwide. They only make 100 bottles of this precious hijzooshu sake annually. A wooden water trough in front of the store was made in Gujo 400 years ago. It's filled with spring water flowing from a limestone cave system. The slightly hard water is ideal for brewing sake, miso, and soy sauce. A machine provides empty plastic bottles so you can take some water with you.

    A soba noodle shop near the Sogi-sui Spring (also known as Hakuun-sui), which was certified among the best of Japan's Top 100 Famous Water by the Ministry of the Environment. They use this great Gujo water along with carefully selected domestic soba flour to make their noodles. Their most popular meal is their chilled zaru soba noodle and Hida beef rice bowl set, featuring buckwheat noodles with a pleasant texture and aroma and a small Hida beef bowl prepared with soba broth. Offering a little taste of luxury in a casual atmosphere, their Hida beef bowls are often sold out due to limited quantities. Abandoning the air of exclusiveness that some soba shops have, their Chomolungma zaru soba featuring an extra-large serving of noodles is popular with young people challenging themselves to eat it all.

It consists of three facilities, centering on the riverside Barbecue House Piccolo where they provide everything you need for a barbecue. They also feature Cafe Augusta, with a display of old-school motorbikes from the 60s and 70s, as well as an inviting wooden lodge known as the Cottage Stropen House. Their regular barbecue sites are only partially roofed to accentuate the feeling of being outdoors. They are available for use by up to 36 visitors and are open until 21:00, so visitors can enjoy a barbecue beneath the starry sky."

    This tree-lined street stretches along the Kawaura River in the Ushimaki area approximately ten minutes from the Mino-Kamo Interchange. Around 50 Yoshino cherry trees are planted along the clear stream. Since it is a street with usually very little traffic, it is a hidden gem that even many locals living in Minokamo City do not know of. The magnificent view of the street lined with cherry trees and the rocky mountains is known to changes its appearance at different times of the day, due to the different way the light shines on it in the morning and in the afternoon. In mid-April, when the flowers are in full bloom, the place is crowded with many visitors from inside and outside the prefecture come to admire the cherry blossoms.

    "These cherry tree blooms on the grounds of Shoganji Temple belonging to the Myoshinji Sect of the Rinzai School are approximately 20 minutes from the Tomika-Seki Interchange. These cherries bloom splendidly in front of the Hongan of Shoganji Temple, established by Kanzan Muso Daishi in 1330. The drooping cherry are said to be 300 years old, and it is known for how the blooms enhance the solemn atmosphere of Shoganji Temple, also known as the ""Oku no In (inner shrine)"" of Myoshinji Temple. In 1971, it was also designated a cultural heritage of Minokamo City. Since it is close to another popular cherry tree viewing spot, Cherry Trees of Ushimaki Area, many people go to see both places when the cherries are in full bloom."

    This Kannon-do (temple dedicated to Kannon) of the Hida River is located within Hida-Kisogawa Quasi-National Park. A Bato Kannon (horse-headed Kannon) is enshrined on Naka no Shima, an island that used to be connected to land. This building has a connection with a warrior of the late Heian period called Yoshinaka Kiso, and now is worshiped as the principal object of worship that grants wishes for health, protection during travel and childbearing. Every year on the first Sunday of March, the popular Hatsu-uma Annual Festival is held here, and a potted plant market as well as many stands line the Oyama riverbank. Kanon Bridge, built so that people could come and go on land, is also known as a great cherry tree viewing spot, and many cherry tree admirers come from neighboring villages when the trees are in bloom.

    This forest park stretches northeast where the Hida and Kiso rivers meet. Inside the 23-hectare park, there are around 4,000 meters of walking paths. It is known as a great flower viewing spot with around 5700 flowers from 35 species planted. During early to mid-April when the Edo-higanzakura cherry and hill cherry among other flowers are in bloom, the place is crowded with many sightseers. There are also resting spots and gazebos, so it is also fun to have a leisurely walk around. From the Hakusan Observary, you can see where the Hida River and Kiso River meet, as well as the city and the mountains such as Mt. Ontake.

    This tourism orchard is located a five-minute drive from Furui Station. You can enjoy safe and secure pear picking, due to cultivation methods using minimal agricultural chemicals. The plateau of the mountain overlooking the Hida River and Kiso River is a land rich in soil where pears and winter persimmons have been cultivated for a long time. Freshly picked pears have a luxurious taste overflowing with freshness and sweetness. You can enjoy picking Kosui pears from mid-August to late August and 20th Century pears from early September to mid-October. It is also close to the Mino-Kamo Interchange and Gifu Seiryuu Satoyama Park.

    The town is located in the center of the sixteen Mino inns, and was once the Ota government office of the Owari Clan, which controlled the area from Ochiai Inn to Unuma Inn, as well as the Kawanami guard station. The area has been developed as a fossil forest park, and the river stone pavement still evokes nostalgia.

    This shrine is located ten minutes from the Minokamo Interchange. The exact construction is unknown, but it is reported that the shrine was renamed Mototsushima Shrine, Hachioji Shrine and Nakatomi Shrine during the Meiji period (1868-1912). The festival held on the second Saturday and Sunday of April every year is famous. Small shrines are brought out under the vividly blooming Yoshino cherry and double-flowered cherry. A man wearing a fly-like demon mask appears and performs an exorcism which involves lightly tapping the head of the worshiper with a bamboo stick called a Sasara. This is said to make children smarter.
