  • Narai Kiso Bridge

    Nagano Shiojiri-shi Narai 1346-3
A traditional Japanese arched bridge spanning the clear Narai River in Narai-juku, Shiojiri City. The beautiful bridge is made entirely of hinoki cypress and is one of the largest of its kind not using bridge piers in Japan. Today, the bridge connects National Route 19 (the Nakasendo Road) and Narai-juku. The complex structure of the arching bridge pairs well with the surrounding townscape, which still looks much as it did in the Edo period. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, a lush riverside park and expansive grass lawn park are also located nearby. The bridge is lit up at night from early April to late November, enabling visitors to enjoy a fairytale-like aspect of the bridge which contrasts with its daytime majesty.
  • Momosuke Bridge

    Nagano Pref. Kisogunnagisomachi Yomikaki
A bridge spanning the Kiso River situated along the Nakasendo Highway in Yomikaki, Nagiso Town, Kiso County. The bridge was built in 1922 to transport material to build a hydroelectric power plant. Thereafter, the bridge was used by local residents, eventually falling into disrepair and almost being demolished due to age. The bridge, however, was recognized as an important piece of heritage from Japan's modernization period and was restored to its former glory. The surrounding area is maintained as a park.

Nagano Areas

around-area-map

Nagano prefecture is an exciting mix of mountains, hot spring monkeys, and preserved Edo history. At the heart of the Japanese Alps, Nagano is one of the country’s most popular destinations, whether in winter for its snow sports and the much-loved Jigokudani Monkey Park or in the warmer months for discovering the undulating hills on foot. For fantastic Edo architecture, head to the Kiso Valley for a 60-kilometer stretch of quaint wooden buildings that marked the Nakasendo route 200 years ago.
