Nagano Kiso-gun Nagiso Machi Azuma Tsumagoshuku
The road is located in Agatsuma, Minami-Kiso Town, Kiso-gun, and has been selected as a national Important Preservation District for Traditional Buildings. The remains of this road are still preserved today, allowing visitors to catch a glimpse of what remains of those days.

  • Otsumago

    Nagano Pref. Kisogunnagisomachi Aduma
"A section of Kiso Town, Kiso County, Nagano Prefecture situated along the old Nakasendo Highway now designated as the Tsumago Post Town Preservation District. The road is lined with many old homes built in the ""dashibari-zukuri"" style with ""sode-udatsu"" short pillars supporting the roof. Japanese-style bed and breakfasts are also located nearby, and the area is enwrapped in a tranquil, rural atmosphere. As the Nakasendo continues towards Magome-juku and goes beyond Kudaritani, human dwellings peter out, and the highway turns into a mountain road."

    Nagano Shiojiri-shi Narai 1346-3

The beautiful bridge is made entirely of hinoki cypress and is one of the largest of its kind not using bridge piers in Japan. Today, the bridge connects National Route 19 (the Nakasendo Road) and Narai-juku. The complex structure of the arching bridge pairs well with the surrounding townscape, which still looks much as it did in the Edo period. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, a lush riverside park and expansive grass lawn park are also located nearby. The bridge is lit up at night from early April to late November, enabling visitors to enjoy a fairytale-like aspect of the bridge which contrasts with its daytime majesty.

    Nagano Shiojiri-shi Kisohirasawa
This town, located in the center of Nagano Prefecture, developed on the large curve of the Narai River's flood plain in the south-central part of what is now Shiojiri City crisscrossed by the river and the Nakasendo Road. People have lived in the region since ancient times, but it began being maintained as a part of the Nakasendo Road by the Tokugawa shogunate government in 1602. The many highly distinctive buildings in the area speak of its history as a center for lacquer work. The town's main street is occupied by many store buildings and is connected directly to the Kinsai-cho neighborhood where artisans gathered, resulting in a townscape deeply colored by a history as a location where the entire lacquer work process, from production to sale, was conducted.
