    Tsugaike Kogen Ski Resort is popular among beginners and families for its safe terrain. The Kane-no-naru-oka course slopes gently down the hill and has a generous width of over 1200 meters. Skiers can also enjoy the fantastic atmosphere when the slopes are lit up during night skiing. The uma-no-se (horseback) course for advanced skiers is set on a narrow ridge with large humps continuing down the steep slope. On fine days Mt. Fuji can be seen from the highest point at an elevation of 1700 meters. For the adventurous why not try out the special Heli-ski and Snowboard activity.

In the Horigane and Hotaka districts there are two areas, where the preservation and restoration of rural scenery in Azumino is carried out. All areas of the national park are designed with a diverse array of recreational activities in mind.

    This vast wasabi farm in Azumino spans a space equal to 11 Tokyo Domes. Entry is free and the farm is open every day year-round. In addition to wasabi fields and a processing plant, visitors can enjoy the tranquil waterside scenery, including a water mill used in a Kurosawa’s film. The farm’s shop sells unique products found nowhere else such as wasabi soft serve ice cream and wasabi-don rice bowls. If traveling by train, a 10-minute taxi ride from Hotaka Station on the JR Oito Line.

    This facility was opened in 1958 with the goal of preserving the works of Rokuzan Ogiwara, nicknamed the “Rodin of the East.” In addition to his masterpiece carvings such as “Woman” and “Despair,” the museum also displays the works of Kotaro Takamura, who was deeply connected to Rokuzan. The impressive building, covered in ivy and church-like in appearance, is beloved as a symbol of the Azumino region. A 10-minute walk from JR Hotaka Station.

    This art museum is not a big one but the building is so beautiful. You can walk from Hotaka station and there's a good soba shop nearby.

    A mountain resort where you can enjoy activities as varied as winter sports, trekking, and mountain biking among magnificent scenery. In the winter, it's a white wonderland with skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and more. It has 26 runs with a diversity of natural terrain, the most in the Hakuba area. Its HAKUBA MOUNTAIN HARBOR opened in 2018 and has a superb view of the Shirouma Sanzan peaks. The outdoor terrace hosts THE CITY BAKERY, a veteran shop with branches around the country. It's open during the winter, too.

    This shrine in Nagano Prefecture’s Azumino City is frequented by believers who pray to the deity of land and sea transportation and industry. It is actually comprised of three places, the Hongu main shrine located close to JR Hotaka Station, the Okumiya rear shrine in Kamikochi and a small shrine atop the summit of Mt. Okuhotaka, and is famous as the sochinju (local Shinto deity) of the Japan Alps. Within the premises of the Hongu are the main shrine in Midono-style, a kagura hall, Wakamiya shrine, and two Japanese zelkova trees which have been designated as Azamino City Designated Natural Monuments. The Ofune Matsuri or “Boat Festival” in which boat-shaped floats adorned with Hotaka ningyo dolls are collided together takes place every year on September 27, and the event is attended by many worshippers.

    This Dosojin (traveler’s guardian deity) located in Hotaka of Nagano Prefecture’s Azumino City was built for production of the TV drama “Mizuiro-no-Toki” which was broadcast on NHK from April to October of 1975. Many viewers of the program visited the site while the show was being broadcast and even now it continues to be treasured by the locals. There are two statues each with two deities surrounded by a small area filled with flowers that bloom in all four seasons.

This is a famous restaurant that is well known for its traditional soba that are handmade with natural spring water from Azamino and soba flour grown at the foot of the Yatsugatake mountains and milled with a stone mortar. They also pride themselves on their soba-tsuyu broth made without any chemical seasonings using ingredients such as wild bonito, konbu (kelp) and soy sauce. In addition to their simple Mori-soba, other well-liked offerings on the menu include the Tenkei-soba which is topped with approximately 10 types of ingredients and the Oshibori-soba that nearly brings tears to the eye thanks to the juice squeezed from a spicy radish.

The foot bath is distinctive for the stone statue with eight stone faces that portrays the eight-faced king, a character in an old folk legend of Azamino. Small round stones have been set into the bottom of the bath to stimulate the feet and help one recover from exhaustion.     This soba restaurant in Nagano Prefecture’s Azumino City is so popular that the reservation book inside the store fills up before the restaurant opens. The interior shows their attention to detail such as tables using old wood and items handmade by artists, all within a dignified environment comprised of an old storehouse with thick earthen walls and wooden beams. The zaru soba which uses the flower buds of wasabi as a condiment is an exquisite item that will make you want to eat more of thanks to its gentle rich-tasting tsuyu sauce and fragrance of the wasabi. The Yukibana Zaru Soba that is topped with plenty of tororo (grated yam) as well as gold dust is also popular. They have an extensive field, soba field, and garden in which hydrangea and cherry trees bloom, which make for nice places to enjoy a stroll either while waiting or after the meal.

    This is a day-trip hot spring facility located in Nagano Prefecture’s Azumino City. It is loved by locals as a hot spring that can be used easily, and guests can enjoy the atmosphere of the hot spring set amidst the mountains. The building takes on the appearance of an old Japanese-style house and is complete with a large room where guests can take their time and relax. The hot spring is also called Bijin-no-Yu (beautiful women’s water) since it is said to be good for the skin, and guests can enjoy both the rotemburo (open-air bath) and the indoor bath. Guests may enter the bath after purchasing a ticket from the vending machine when they enter, and they can relax for up to three hours for free. They also sell fresh local vegetables in the vegetable corner.

    少し山の中にはいりますが、松本へいく道の途中ということもあり、それなりに混み合っていました。 貴重品は入り口ロッカーで預けないとなかにはかごかただの木のロッカーのみです。 柔らかい泉質で、夏は露天で時々外の風に当たりながら入るのがよさそうです。 休憩室は持ち込み可能でした。 長野は涼しく、遅い時間に入るなら場合によっては長袖でよさそうでした。 入り口の野菜が安かったです。

With its atmospheric Japanese space, this spot is one you can enjoy famous local brewers’ sake and the great taste of Omachi. *Since the famous Omachi “ozanza” has been discontinued, it will only be offered as long as available in the stockroom.

    Came here solo and it was an amazing fine dining experience but at such a low price. Each dish was sourced from local produce and presented beautifully

    This is a stone monument bearing an inscription for Ode to Early Spring, a song written by Kazumasa Yoshimaru in the Taisho period. The song incorporates the feelings of waiting impatiently for Azumino’s spring, and ever since it has been sung fondly by many people. The monument was built in 1984 by the kindness of many people including the townspeople.

The full cafe menu contains aromatic home-roasted coffee and homemade gelato. They also sell Leonidas chocolate, a brand which serves the Belgian royal family.

    This is an art museum within Akamatsu Forest, Azumino City, Nagano Prefecture, displaying mainly the original pictures from contemporary picture books from Japan and abroad. They collect original pictures from works such as Bernadette Watts’ The Little Match Girl and Delia Cancela’s “Alice in Wonderland,” and several times a year hold planned exhibits. They give particular attention to the works of Kenji Miyazawa. There are a number of facilities including library with around 8,000 picture books, a museum shop, and cafe where one can enjoy handmade cake and lunch.
