  • Ogizawa Station

    A station on the Kanden Tunnel Trolleybus line run by Kansai Electric Power Company, it serves as the entrance to the Nagano Prefecture-side of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route. Inside the three-story station building, there is a ticket office on the first floor, a restaurant on the second, and the platform and observation deck on the third. In 2019, it will cease being a station with the pending elimination of the trolleybus.

    This vast wasabi farm in Azumino spans a space equal to 11 Tokyo Domes. Entry is free and the farm is open every day year-round. In addition to wasabi fields and a processing plant, visitors can enjoy the tranquil waterside scenery, including a water mill used in a Kurosawa’s film. The farm’s shop sells unique products found nowhere else such as wasabi soft serve ice cream and wasabi-don rice bowls. If traveling by train, a 10-minute taxi ride from Hotaka Station on the JR Oito Line.

    Tsugaike Kogen Ski Resort is popular among beginners and families for its safe terrain. The Kane-no-naru-oka course slopes gently down the hill and has a generous width of over 1200 meters. Skiers can also enjoy the fantastic atmosphere when the slopes are lit up during night skiing. The uma-no-se (horseback) course for advanced skiers is set on a narrow ridge with large humps continuing down the steep slope. On fine days Mt. Fuji can be seen from the highest point at an elevation of 1700 meters. For the adventurous why not try out the special Heli-ski and Snowboard activity.

    "A mountain located in Hakuba Village, Kitaazumi County, Nagano Prefecture. ""Happo-one"" means ""mountain ridges in all directions,"" a reference to the spurs which extend in all directions from Mt. Karamatsu in the Hakuba Mountain Range. Many people come here to enjoy trekking, and the course is dotted with scenic spots overlooking Happo Pond and 11 of Japan's 100 most well-known mountains. Rare alpine plans and Natural Monument-designated species such as Japanese serow and ptarmigans live in the area."

    With an elevation of 1515 meters at its highest part called Alps-daira Hakuba Goryu Snow Resort has some true alpine slopes. With an elevation as high as this powder snow and quality snow is all but guaranteed. The magnificent Northern Alps (Hida Mountains) can be experienced up close and the city of Hakuba sprawls out down below. In early spring you can see the shape of the Takeda family crest on the mountain side from the observatory on the roof of the gondola summit station. Even people who don’t ski or snowboard come here to relax enjoy a meal and take in the stunning scenery.

    "A roadside station situated along the Chikuni Highway in Kitaotari, Otari Village, Kitaazumi County. The station sells local specialty products from Otari Village. The station's restaurant serves set meals made with stove cooked Otari-grown Koshihikari rice and other local ingredients as well as noodles, a la carte dishes, and local liquors. The station is adjoined by a bathhouse whose baths are constantly replenished ""kakenagashi"" style from a natural hot spring which offers a discount meal and bath set."
  • Omine Kogen7-Colored Giant Maple

    Reaching for the sky in the Omine Highlands are these large maple trees of around 250 years old. The area became known as the “7-Colored Giant Maple” due to the way in which the colors of the trees changed through seven different hues over a month or so starting from the beginning of October each year. The place is the setting for the TV drama series, Ohisama, and attracts many visitors.

    A roadside station situated along the Chikuni Kaido Road in Kamishiro, Hakuba Village. The station sells Hakuba specialty products; okowa rice, okaki; and other processed foods made in the adjoining factory; crafts; and, in summer, fresh agricultural products. The station's restaurant serves dishes made with local Hakuba brand pork and stone-milled, handmade soba noodles.

    A roadside station located in Horiganekarasugawa, Azumino City. The station sells fresh vegetables and other agricultural products from Azumino as well as processed foods. The station's restaurant serves daily set meal specials, an onigiri rice ball set meal with your choice of two rice balls from a selection of six, donburi rice bowls, and noodles.
  • Tsugaike Nature Park

    A nature park situated inside Chubu Sangaku National Park which encloses one of Japan’s best high moors, which extends across a 2,000 meter tall mountain. The park is also renowned for its blooming flowers and fall colors. Alpine plants such as Asian skunk cabbage, Japanese wood poppy, and Dryas pentapetala can be found in the park, which flower beautifully from June to August. The park is outfitted with approximately 5.5 kilometers of wooden footpaths for visitors to take leisurely strolls on.

    This ski resort in the Hakuba area is known for a regular amount of snowfall of superb quality. Consisting of eight routes, half pipes, and a kids slope. It connects with Hakuba Goryu at the summit, and you can come and go between them with the same lift pass. The Route 3 course in front of the gondola station at the summit is an action-packed run where moguls have been left the entire way. Hakuba 47’s hallmark Route 1 run also comes highly recommended. It’s the first slope groomed in the morning, and you can enjoy great scenery while skiing down towards the village of Hakuba.
  • Chihiro Art Museum Azumino

    This art museum located inside of the Azumino Chihiro Park in the Matsukawa Village district of Kita-Azumi County, Nagano Prefecture collects and displays works by picture book artists from around the world including Chihiro Iwasaki. In addition to displays about Chihiro’s representative works, related items, and career, the museum also introduces the history of picture books and a collection of original pictures from picture books around the world. The museum is complete with facilities sure to delight children such as a reading room where they can read their choice from approximately 3,000 picture books as well as a play area for small children. There is also a picture book café where visitors can relax while gazing out at Japan’s Northern Alps (Hida Mountains).
  • Hotaka-jinja Shrine

    This shrine in Nagano Prefecture’s Azumino City is frequented by believers who pray to the deity of land and sea transportation and industry. It is actually comprised of three places, the Hongu main shrine located close to JR Hotaka Station, the Okumiya rear shrine in Kamikochi and a small shrine atop the summit of Mt. Okuhotaka, and is famous as the sochinju (local Shinto deity) of the Japan Alps. Within the premises of the Hongu are the main shrine in Midono-style, a kagura hall, Wakamiya shrine, and two Japanese zelkova trees which have been designated as Azamino City Designated Natural Monuments. The Ofune Matsuri or “Boat Festival” in which boat-shaped floats adorned with Hotaka ningyo dolls are collided together takes place every year on September 27, and the event is attended by many worshippers.

    "The furthest downstream of the three ""Nishina"" lakes, which includes Lake Aoki and Lake Nakatsuna. The lakeshore area is maintained as a park with walking paths; a comprehensive hot spring bath facility and sports facilities are also located nearby, and the area is a popular destination for conducting sports training camps. Due to its cool climate, the lake area also sees many visitors in summer seeking to escape the heat. The Lake Kizaki Fireworks Show is held in August."

    This campground is situated deep in the mountains of Myoko-Togakushi Renzan National Park. There are a total of 42 automobile camping sites and sites for climbers of Mt. Amazakari, and it is used also as a mountain climbing base. In the shop, in addition to selling food ingredients including mushrooms and edible wild plants, fuel and bells to ward off bears, they also rent out tents and sleeping bags. You can also enjoy activities (some require fee/reservation) such as campfires, barbecues, bonfires and oil drum bathing.

    Happo Pond reflects the Hakuba Mountain Range like a mirror. Located 2,060 meters above sea level in Hakuba Village, the seasonal beauty of area is reflected by the surface of the pond—in early summer, snow still lingers on the mountains, while in fall they are dyed crimson and gold.
  • Yottetei Matsukawa (Roadside Station Azumino Matsukawa)

    "This roadside station is on Prefectural Route 306 in Hosono, Matsukawa Village, Kita-azumi County. They have a specialty product area selling oyaki dumplings and other snacks, a farm stand, and a restaurant serving fare made with local ingredients like set meals, rice bowls, and noodle dishes. They also put on the ""Suzumushi no Sato Crystal Symphony"" every year from late August to mid-September during the season when the crickets are chirping. They hang lanterns for it, and there are activities and events like cricket catching, habitat exploration, and live music."

    This national park in Azumino stretches over the foothills of the Northern Alps. It is divided into two areas with the theme being the realization of fruitful free time activities in nature and culture. There are five areas in the Omachi and Matsukawa districts, preserving the excellent natural environment for the Alps mountain landscape. In the Horigane and Hotaka districts there are two areas, where the preservation and restoration of rural scenery in Azumino is carried out. All areas of the national park are designed with a diverse array of recreational activities in mind.
