The Saba Highway gained this name relatively recently because of the large amount of salted mackerel (saba) that was carried on the highways. The Izumicho Merchants Alley is marked as the start of the Saba Highway with a plate containing the words ""Kyo wa totemo juhachiri"" (Kyoto is only 18-ri about 44 miles away).
