- This lava plateau is located a 10-minute drive from Hachi-jojima Airport. The black basalt plateau is 500 meters wide and 100 meters long. The desolate landscape was formed when lava from an eruption of Mt. Hachijo-Fuji flowed into the sea the waves crashing against the plateau cliff results in explosive sprays of ocean water. Statues of Ukita Hideie, who was banished here after being defeated in the Battle of Sekigahara, and his wife Gohime, who continued to send supplies to her husband as well as her son, are located around 100 meters south of the plateau's parking area.
