    Hokkaido Shiraoi-gun Shiraoicho Jinyamachi 681
This historical park is located approximately a five-minute drive from Shiraoi Station, or approximately a 10-minute drive from Shiraoi Interchange. The Sendai-han Shiraoi Motojinya Museum is also located within the park grounds. The encampment was constructed in 1856, and it is said that more than 100 feudal retainers were stationed here over 12 years. The encampment played an important role in guarding Japan from foreign invasion when the county's borders were opened, and was only dismantled after the Boshin War and a revolt in Shiraoi. Since the encampment was the largest of its kind in Hokkaido, it has been designated as a nationally important historic site, and even now, the remains of the encampment and the retainers' burial site can be clearly seen.

    Hokkaido Noboribetsushi Noboribetsuonsenchou
This is “The Enma King of Hell mechanical festival float” which was produced in commemoration of the thirtieth “Noboribetsu Hell Festival”. Enma, the King of Hell stands overlooking the passersby in the main street called Gokuraku (meaning Heaven) of Noboribetsu Onsen. Six times a day (five times in winter), at the time of “judgment of hell”, it raises his arms frighteningly and judges the sins of people. A huge crowd forms at the time of the judgement. The mechanical gimmick has great impact and has become the symbol of Noboribetsu Onsen.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
