  • Mizunashi Kaihin Onsen
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Hakodate, Hokkaido Esanmisaki
Located in the Todohokke area of Hakodate, Mizunashi kaihin onsen is a natural outdoor bath where there are changes in the water temperature due to the rising and falling of the tide, which is unusual even for Japan. The onsen is submerged at high tide, and you can only bathe at low tide. It is recommended that you check in advance because there are times when it is not possible to bathe due to environmental effects such as weather conditions and high waves. Bathing is free, but swimwear is essential for mixed bathing. Separate changing rooms for men and women are provided.

    Hokkaido Hakodateshi Yayoichou 14-9
A public bath facility which has been a popular social gathering place for local residents since the Taisho period in 1914. The bathhouse is located over a hill travelling from Hakodate Dock-Mae Station on the city light rail line. The current building was built in 1928, replacing the former bathhouse. Notable for its distinctive exterior mixing Western and Japanese influences, a rarity for such a structure across the entire country, the interior retains such retro touches as old-fashioned scales and a staff watch stand. The facility has been designated a scenic landmark by the city of Hakodate and has been used for filming movies as well.

Taishou-yu is a sentou (public bath) in a pretty western style building completed in 1928 and still in business. It is locared in the temple district of Funamichou. I had to stop to take a photo of...

    Hokkaido Hakodateshi Yunokawachou 1-16-5
This footbath was made right in front of the Hakodate Tram Yunokawa Onsen stop. The facility opened in December 2007, and its spacious tub is made so even groups can enjoy a relaxing soak together. Since it uses the hot springs of Hakodate's Okuzashiki and Yunokawa Onsen, it is a sodium-calcium chloride spring. It helps to alleviate nerve pain, muscle pain and fatigue, and has become a place for residents returning from shopping and overseas tourists to relax. Covered with a roof, you can enjoy it without any worries even when there is sudden rain or snow.

Free foot onsen along the road. It was nice and wasn't too crowded. Can be found just at the intersection. Felt good to relax here for 15 minutes or so!

"A restaurant and inn located in Osaki, Kaminokuni Town, Hiyama County, Hokkaido Prefecture. The establishment serves dishes made with fresh seafood from Maehama. In addition to lunchtime sushi and seafood rice bowl selections, for dinner customers can enjoy seafood to their heart's content, including nabe hotpot, sashimi, and the ""Ganso Awabi-meshi"" mixed rice made with Hokkaido abalone. All of the establishment's guest rooms face the Sea of Japan and on clear days in summer, guests can take in the beauty of the sun sinking into the sea of Japan at dusk."

  • Nanae Town Health Center Apple Onsen
    Accommodations / Hot Spring
    Hokkaido Kameda-gun Nanaecho Nakano 194-1
This day-use hot spring, open since 1999, is about a ten-minute drive from Hakodate Interchange. In recent years, Nanae Town has seen a variety of businesses gather due to a positive labor market, but this facility's name comes from the area's history as the starting point for western apple cultivation in Japan. This hot spring neither adds water nor recirculates the spring water so the hot spring effects are particularly strong. The alkaline simple springs are said to be effective at treating nerve pain, muscle soreness and joint pain, as well as helping with fatigue recovery. In addition to the reasonable price, the natural hot spring is gentle on the body and offers lasting warmth, making it particularly popular with older customers and women.

    Hokkaido Kudo-gun Setana Cho Taisei-ku Hirahama 691
"This unstaffed hot spring is surrounded by steep forest hills on a logging road about three kilometers from national route 229. The little bath hut has a log-house exterior, and inside offers 100% natural hot spring water without any added water or recirculation of the rather hot sodium sulfate spring. The area is secluded enough to warrant a ""Caution: Bears"" sign outside. This spot has been in use for over 200 years, and is famous as a treatment spring for nerve pain and muscle soreness, chronic digestive diseases, and more. The picturesque scenery offers a whole new level of liberation. The building is rather cozy, but women and men have separate changing rooms for peace of mind."

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
