    Hokkaido Kamikawagunkamikawachou Sounkyou
One of the mountains of the Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group in Hokkaido. The mountain is known as the first location in Japan where autumn foliage starts appearing. 1,984 meters tall, it's even taller than the Japan Alps. Gentle ridges slope away from the mountain's top and the area above 1,800 meters is a vast habitat for alpine plants. A large ropeway line connects Sounkyo Onsen to the mountain's fifth station 1,300 meters above sea level. From there, there's a pair lift that will take you to the seventh station 1,520 meters up, making it easy to enjoy the alpine scenery.

    Hokkaido Kamikawa-gun Higashi-kawacho Asahidake Onsen
"Hokkaido's highest mountain with an altitude of approximately 2,291 meters, it is the main peak of the Daisetsuzan mountain range and has been chosen as one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. Located on the northern side of Daisetsuzan National Park, you can enjoy an aerial walk and climb to an altitude of around 1,600 meters with the ropeway to the fifth station in around ten minutes. The area is overflowing in alpine plant varieties, and when the flowers of summertime add color to the landscape underfoot, it is known in the traditional Ainu language as ""Kamuimintara (the garden where the gods reside)."" The first leaves that change color in Japan are also spectacular. You can enjoy activities depending on the season such as trekking and skiing."
  • Ginsendai

    Hokkaido Kamikawagunkamikawachou Sounkyou
A spot famous for its beautiful autumn foliage located in the area of the Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group. Also known as Akadake, in fall the entire area turns crimson with the changing of the leaves. During the peak fall foliage period in mid-September, the road connecting to Ginsendai from the national road is closed to general traffic. The preferred sightseeing route during this time is to park in the Daisetsu Lake Site parking area and take the shuttle bus from there. Taking just ten minutes to climb up the mountain road from the parking area, the shuttle bus drops you off at a perfect spot for taking in the beautiful ridge of Akadake.

Hokkaido Areas

around-area-map

Not just a prefecture but an island of its own, Hokkaido is the most northerly prefecture and island of the Japanese archipelago. Arriving in Hokkaido, which is rural and bursting with breathtaking nature, means entering a world where vast national parks, towering mountains, and natural hot springs can be found at every turn. Come December, these natural splendors freeze over and morph into a winter wonderland.
