  • Shirogane Blue Pond
    Travel / Tourism
    Hokkaido Kamikawagumbieichou Shirogane
Depending on the time of year and the angle that you view it from, the water of Shirogane Blue Pond may appear either blue or green. Surrounded by ancient trees (including Japanese Larch), and with the sunlight creating magical effects on the water’s surface, this is a very popular place for taking photos. In winter, the Pond is illuminated, creating an even more mysterious effect. The Pond receives very large numbers of visitors on weekends and during the Golden Week (roughly April 29 to early May) holiday period, so it’s best to allow yourself plenty of time to get there.
  • Shirahige Waterfall
    Travel / Tourism
    Hokkaido Kamikawagumbieichou Shirogane
This is an extremely beautiful waterfall, with a blue-tinted stream that wells up from an underground water source crashing over the falls and sending up a white spray. In early summer, the waterfall makes a wonderful contrast with the surrounding greenery, while in winter the whole area is covered in snow; this has made the Shirahige Waterfall a popular place to take photos. The illuminations during the winter months are a must-see.
  • Sounkyo
    Travel / Tourism
    Hokkaido Kamikawagunkamikawachou Sounkyou
This is a gorge lined with cliffs of columnar joints continuing on for about 24 kilometers, located in the Daisetsuzan National Park in Kamikawa Town, Hokkaido. In the surrounds are the Sounkyo hot springs, one of Hokkaido’s premier hot spring areas lined with hotels and Japanese style inns. The name originates from the Ainu “sounbetsu” which means “the river with many waterfalls”, and was named in 1921 by Keigetsu Omachi. The waterfalls flowing from the cliffs—Ryusei (shooting star) and Ginga (milky way) Falls are a magnificent sight and regarded as one of the top 100 waterfalls in Japan.
  • Mt. Kurodake
    Travel / Tourism
    Hokkaido Kamikawagunkamikawachou Sounkyou
One of the mountains of the Daisetsuzan Volcanic Group in Hokkaido. The mountain is known as the first location in Japan where autumn foliage starts appearing. 1,984 meters tall, it's even taller than the Japan Alps. Gentle ridges slope away from the mountain's top and the area above 1,800 meters is a vast habitat for alpine plants. A large ropeway line connects Sounkyo Onsen to the mountain's fifth station 1,300 meters above sea level. From there, there's a pair lift that will take you to the seventh station 1,520 meters up, making it easy to enjoy the alpine scenery.

    Travel / Tourism
    Hokkaido Kamikawagunkamikawachou Sounkyou
The cliffs alongside the Ishikari River continue on for 24 kilometers. The two most famous waterfalls flowing from the cliff are Ryusei no Taki (Shooting Stars Falls) and Ginga no Taki (Milky Way Falls). The Shooting Stars waterfall falls violently from a height of 90 meters while the Milky Way waterfall gracefully falls the 120 meters like a fine white thread. The falls are also referred to as male and female falls due to their symmetry. There is a large carpark on route 39 and a 20-minute walk with the waterfalls as a backdrop will lead you to the Sobakudai viewpoint.

"Hokkaido's highest mountain with an altitude of approximately 2,291 meters, it is the main peak of the Daisetsuzan mountain range and has been chosen as one of the 100 Famous Japanese Mountains. Located on the northern side of Daisetsuzan National Park, you can enjoy an aerial walk and climb to an altitude of around 1,600 meters with the ropeway to the fifth station in around ten minutes. The area is overflowing in alpine plant varieties, and when the flowers of summertime add color to the landscape underfoot, it is known in the traditional Ainu language as ""Kamuimintara (the garden where the gods reside)."" The first leaves that change color in Japan are also spectacular. You can enjoy activities depending on the season such as trekking and skiing."
  • Hagoromo Falls
    Travel / Tourism
    Hokkaido Kamikawa-gun Higashi-kawacho Tenninkyo
This waterfall can be reached from Tenninkyo Gorge in the southeastern part of Daisetsuzan National Park by the promenade. The beautiful way in which two mountain streams merge to form a waterfall is reminiscent of the celestial nymph's robe of feathers, and it received its name from the writer Keigetsu Omachi in 1918. It boasts the title of being the largest waterfall in Hokkaido and the second largest in Japan with a height of 270 meters, and has been chosen as one of Japan's top 100 waterfalls. There is also a waterfall stand where you can face the waterfall in front. Being able to enjoy the superb view together with colorful autumn leaves is a major draw. The promenade is accessible from mid-May to mid-November. It is closed due to snow in the winter.

    Travel / Tourism
    Hokkaido Kamikawa-gun Higashi-kawacho Tenninkyo
"This gorge is located at the southeastern foot of the mountains of Daisetsuzan National Park upstream on the Chubetsu River. The columnar joints of the cliffs were formed over many years after a huge eruption that occurred about 30,000 years ago, and it is truly a masterpiece of nature. Many visitors come every year during the autumn to see ""Namida Iwa,"" ""Shichifuku Iwa"" and the changing colors of the trees. The contrast between the rocks and the vibrant red and yellows of the leaves is truly stunning."
