Kozan-ji Temple
A famous Zen Buddhist temple located in the eastern part of Shimonoseki City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, the westernmost part of the island of Honshu. The main temple, the oldest extant example of Zen architecture in the country, is a designated a National Treasure. The ancient Kozan-ji has been the stage where history was made numerous times, and is famously the place where Takasugi Shinsaku raised his army of around 80 followers. The temple grounds are also one of the top destinations for fall foliage in the prefecture, and visitors can enjoy the autumn colors relatively late here as they reach their peak from mid-November to mid-December. The temple can be reached by taking a 10 minute bus ride from Chofu Station on the JR San'yo Main Line and getting off at the Jokamachi Chofu bus stop.
