Matsudaira Toshogu Shrine

Shrine
A Shinto shrine dedicated to great members of the Matsudaira clan. The shrine was originally a Hachiman (god of war) shrine located on the grounds of a Matsudaira clan estate. In 1619, Matsudaira clan members also began to be enshrined at the shrine, with the shrine achieving its current state with the enshrinement of Matsudaira Chikauji in 1965. After the Battle of Sekigahara, the surrounding moat and stone walls were maintained by the hands of Matsudaira Naoyoshi, ninth lord of the Matsudaira Tarozaemon clan. The grounds encompass a history museum with materials on the Matsudaira clan, and a well whose waters were used for the first baths of generations of Matsudaira clan members. There's also a monument honoring Matsudaira Nobuhiro, famously known as the daimyo lord music composer.
