Aichi Pref. Chiryushi Nishimachi Jinden 12
A Shinto shrine standing along the Toyota-Minami Bypass in Nishi-machi Jinden, Chiryu City. According to legend, the temple was founded during the reign of Japan's 12th emperor, Emperor Keiko (71-130). In the Edo period, the shrine was counted as one of the three major shrines on the Tokaido highway. Believed to grant protection from mamushi pit vipers, a poisonous variety of snake which lives in the region, the shrine was once frequented by Tokaido travelers. The Chiryu Festival is held each year on May 2 and 3. The full festival is held every second year, and during this time five spectacular traditional shrine floats are put on parade. National Important Intangible Folk-Cultural Property-designated ningyo joruri puppet theater performances are also conducted.

The enshrined deities of this shrine in Iga Town, Okazaki City, Aichi Prefecture, are the Emperor Ojin, the Emperor Chuai, Empress Jingu, and Tosho Daigongen (Ieyasu Tokugawa). The shrine was founded in 1470 by the fourth Chikatada as a guardian shrine for the Matsudaira family, ancestors of the Tokugawa family. Highly revered by the Tokugawa Shogunate, Ieyasu often visited here to pray for victory in war. Many buildings in the shrine’s grounds, such as the main shrine, the hall of offerings, and hall of worship, are important cultural properties of the country. Even now many people come here to pray as it is believed the shrine promises prosperity of family fortunes and success in business, as well as good luck in general. On the coldest day of January, the ‘fate of samurai’ event is held in which warrior’s fortunes for the year are pronounced.

Aichi Areas

around-area-map

Aichi is a prefecture of great natural beauty with Nagoya city at its heart, a busy hub home to a labyrinth of underground shops and the 17th-century Nagoya Castle. Castles are easy to find in this history-rich prefecture, but the highlight for history buffs has to be the Museum Meiji-mura, where preserved buildings from the turn of the 20th century are displayed in all their grandeur in an outdoor museum.
